Summary

The Vice President, Alliance Management will lead a team of professionals that manages key research and development-driven alliances for the company. This critical role requires an experienced, polished leader with strong business acumen, outstanding communications skills, mastery of business processes and a track record of building and developing high-performing teams.

The Alliance Management function in Global Business Development manages partnerships and collaborates with academic organizations, clinical research organizations, licensors, licensees, and co-development partners. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Global External Innovation, this leader will: (i) lead, manage, and develop a team of professionals that will be the hands-on managers of these alliances; (ii) ensure outstanding relationships, both with our external partners and the internal constituencies that we support; (iii) ensure critical alliance-related issues are handled appropriately, both within Daiichi Sankyo and with our partners; (iv) establish best-in-class practices for alliance management, and help develop tools to ensure and track outstanding performance; (v) provide input and suggestions to the business-development transactions team on the alliance-related provisions of contemplated partnerships; (vi) ensure communications and reporting to senior leadership is timely, complete, concise, polished and professional; and (vii) represent business development in discussions of critical alliance-related issues with senior management.

Responsibilities

• Lead strategic direction and execution of alliance partnership direction to meet future business needs and drive value. Assess current practices and business processes and adopt a comprehensive, best-in-class approach to alliance management, with robust business processes, templates, tools, metrics, and tracking. Ensure successful alliance launches and ongoing partner management to enable maximization of value from partnerships. Steward and facilitate any redirection of strategic goals with creative approaches. Demonstrate optimal utilization of alliance management support by aligning time spent with the complexity and importance of the relationship. Ensure that multiple alliances with the same partner are managed consistently and that conflicts and synergies between alliances are considered.
• Oversee portfolio of R&D alliances. Proactively identify potential challenges, issues, and conflicts (both internal and with partners) and work to define and implement solutions and risk mitigation plans, including by proposing and supporting contract amendments. Identify and resolve arising issues or conflicts, helping to ensure the overall value and that each alliance contractual obligation agreement is met and kept intact. Lead the development of solutions that are guided by the best interests of the collaboration and drive adjustment to alliance strategy and governance as appropriate.
• Establish strong working relationships and communication links with key internal and partner stakeholders and effective management of governance meetings. Partner with internal and external stakeholders to enable partnerships to deliver timely and clear decision-making and to achieve business and scientific objectives. Provide unbiased, insightful analysis regarding developing alliance issues to senior management. Provide leadership and advice to alliance project teams.
• Establish, maintain, and grow trusted external networks within the industry. Develop, and inspire teams to maximize performance and enable outstanding management of partnerships.
• Work with autonomy, self-motivation, and efficiency, with an appropriate sense of urgency in a fast-paced and dynamic entrepreneurial environment.

Education Qualifications (from an accredited college or university)

• Bachelor's Degree required
• JD preferred
• MBA preferred
• PharmD preferred
• MD preferred
• DVM preferred

Experience Qualifications

• 10 or more years of pharmaceutical industry experience or life sciences industry experience required.
• 5 years of hands-on proven expertise in Alliance Management, including managing complex collaborations required.
• 5 years of people-management experience with a successful track record of leading, managing, and developing a team of professionals. required.
• Experience designing and implementing robust & scalable internal processes preferred.

Travel

Ability to travel up to 20% (domestic and international).
