Role Description:

The Clinical Development Team is looking for an experienced Director / Senior Director of Patient Advocacy and Engagement who will be responsible for proposing and implementing a robust and effective global patient advocacy and engagement strategy in support of Maze’s product portfolio, with an initial focus on our GYS1 program for Pompe disease as well as our APOL1 program for chronic kidney disease. This individual will play a critical role in promoting a patient-centric culture at Maze and ensure that the patient voice is represented in decision-making and execution in development and eventually commercialization. In addition to working effectively across cross-functionally within Maze, this individual will be required to establish strong relationships with a range of external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and self-directed, and able to function in a highly visible individual contributor role in the near term, with the longer-term potential to build a patient advocacy team as the development pipeline grows. The position will report to the VP of Clinical Development Operations.

Your Impact Includes:

  • Lead the development and implementation of sound internal and external patient advocacy and engagement strategies to accelerate and ensure the success of Maze’s clinical stage programs and eventually commercial efforts for marketed products.
  • Lead organizational efforts to establish and foster strong strategic alliances and relationships with a range of patient advocacy groups and patient community stakeholders; serve as Maze primary point of contact for all patient advocacy organizations.
  • Ensure comprehensive understanding of the “patient voice” through external engagement and research, and in turn ensure that the “patient voice” and any key learnings are appropriately represented in support of internal program strategies and decision-making.
  • Engage with internal Maze teams to identify and implement patient and community engagement and education plans to support Maze clinical development programs, i.e. Maze clinical trial and disease area awareness, clinical trial recruitment and retention, unique and differentiated aspects of Maze precision medicines vs. competing therapies.
  • Serve as the main conduit for disease awareness education as well as provide input on patient perceptions and attitudes toward genetics based medicine such as Maze’s APOL1 program for chronic kidney disease,
  • Evaluate and track the global patient advocacy landscape across several disease areas, both in rare disease and genetic subjects of common diseases.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of industry trends and health policy changes that impact patient advocacy for diseases of interest to Maze.
  • Foster a patient-centric culture at Maze through thoughtful planning and execution of company-wide patient engagement activities, educational programs, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Promote disease awareness and education in collaboration with corporate communications leveraging multiple communication forums and channels.


  • B.A. or an advanced degree in a biomedical or health related field, with 8+ years of relevant experience in patient advocacy and drug development. Experience in an early stage biotech is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute thoughtful patient advocacy strategy and plans at national, regional, and global levels.
  • Proven track record with establishing and cultivating strong relationships and partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders in the patient advocacy community.
  • Broad knowledge base of biopharma industry, including drug development, regulatory, market access / commercialization, PhRMA code, government affairs, and public health policy.
  • High degree of professionalism and diplomacy, and the ability effectively navigate and engage with a diverse range of individuals and organizations while balancing Maze business interests vs. the interests of external parties.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams as well as engage effectively with individuals across the Maze organization.
