The Gladstone Institutes is an independent, not-for-profit research institution affiliated with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), contributing to the health and well-being of all people through medical research, education, and outreach in the areas of heart disease, HIV/AIDS, and neurological disease.
Gladstone is composed of five separate institutes and approximately 400 employees. Our employees receive exceptional benefits. We are located in an award-winning building adjacent to UCSF Mission Bay Campus.
Gladstone has consistently ranked as one of the top places to work in academia in the United States.

The Palop laboratory at the Gladstone Institutes is seeking a Research Associate to provide support for projects aimed at understanding cellular, synaptic and network dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and other neurological disorders. The project is supported by a NIH-SBRI grant aimed at developing novel therapeutics to treat cognitive and network dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Dravet syndrome (DS). This position will focus on preclinical evaluation in mouse models of AD and DS and will require: breeding and maintaining mouse colonies of AD and DS mouse models, dosing (injecting) cohorts of mice for treatment administration, performing behavioral and EEG experiments to assess treatment efficacy of the small molecules, and postmortem immunostaining experiments. The successful candidate will work a as part of a team but may also carry out independent experiments, including data analyses and preparation of figures. Training will be provided and prior experience in behavioral experiments, colony management, IHC, and electrophysiology is preferred but not required. This position offers the opportunity to integrate cutting edge behavioral paradigms and in vivo electrophysiology analysis with machine learning while developing novel therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease and Epilepsy.

Applicants must hold an Associate's degree and 2+ years relevant experience or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Neuroscience or related field with 1–2 years of relevant experience working with rodents. Please provide a cover letter, CV and names of 2-3 references.

Desired experience

  • Experience maintaining mouse colonies, perfusions, and preparing brain tissue for immunohistochemistry.

  • Experience with analytical and visualization software including ImageJ, Excel, Prism, Python, MATLAB, and/or SPSS.

  • Experience performing behavioral experiments in rodents.

  • Experience with multi-electrode array (MEA) recordings from brain slices, and/or electrophysiology.
