What you will do

Lets do this. Lets change the world. In this vital role you will report to the Head of Amgen Ventures, Business Development and can be based in South San Francisco, CA, Cambridge MA, or Thousand Oaks, CA. Other locations may also be considered. The Director will support the Amgen Ventures Leadership and lead the Digital Ventures Investment and Portfolio Management activities including defining strategy, sourcing and comprehensively evaluating investment opportunities, building supportive business cases, and making recommendations to our Ventures Investment Committee for private equity investments.

Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain relationships with healthcare innovators, both in entrepreneurial and academic settings, in the local digital medicine ecosystem and across the globe.
• Lead and coordinate scientific and business due diligence on high-priority opportunities with groundbreaking digital science. Build supportive business cases, lead deal negotiations and making recommendations to our Ventures Investment Committee
• Work with internal Amgen collaborators and with therapeutic area and digital technology experts on strategic priorities and on the identification of potential growth areas.
• Generate and prioritize a flow of innovative opportunities of high potential strategic or opportunistic interest to Amgenin current core business areas, strategic adjacencies, and new potential markets.
• Working cross-functionally with the scientific, commercial, digital technology, transactions, finance, venture capital, legal, project management, and communications groups, to shepherd deals through the decision processes and to closure.
• Lead post-deal management including support of portfolio management teams, company strategy, and follow-on investment where needed
• Actively review and monitor Amgens portfolio companies by staying on top of developments within the companies, building and maintaining good working relationships with executive management and the Board, and participating in Board meetings

Basic Qualifications:

• Doctorate degree in Life Sciences and 4 years of Life Science Venture Capital / Business Development experience OR
• Masters degree and 7 years of Life Science Venture Capital / Business Development experience OR
• Bachelors degree and 9 years of Life Science Venture Capital / Business Development experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A minimum of five years of work experience in the fields of biopharmaceuticals, digital health, consumer health, or health technology is required; this work experience can be directly in these industries (whether in large or small companies) or through direct work experience in venture investing, management consulting, or investment banking.
• At minimum 3 years exposure working with top level corporate executives.
• Experience in the evaluation and execution of equity investments and/or business development deals is required, alongside a general understanding of equity investing.
• A demonstrated track record of high performance, academically and professionally, is preferred.
• The ability to communicate well, both in oral and written form, is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of self-awareness are required. Preferred personality traits include industriousness, flexibility, and a high capacity for teamwork.
• Existing knowledge of, and network in the digital healthcare innovators and investors ecosystem is strongly preferred.
• Some board, board observer or operating experience in the startup biotech environment preferred.
