Job Description

The Associate Director of Hardware Engineering and Fluidics will be responsible for the design and development for a novel diagnostic platform. The primary responsibility is to design and lead development efforts in a broad range of areas including injection molded disposables, fluidics, thermal control, optics, and hand-held instruments. The successful candidate must possess advanced knowledge in a particular field of engineering and have experience driving the completion of projects of high complexity, ideally in FDA regulated environments. To succeed, the candidate must have well developed leadership qualities and exhibit creativity, foresight, and mature judgment. The candidate must have excellent organizational skills, including the ability to evaluate, prioritize, and handle multiple subprojects and priorities. The candidate must have a hands-on approach, including getting in the lab to troubleshoot and assist as may be needed.

  • Lead hardware development and new product design for a complex hand-held device with a broad range of engineering areas including microfluidics, thermal control, optics, injection molded component design, and instrumentation control
  • Collaborate with OEM partners to define optimum product configuration and manage integration
  • Integrate hardware solutions with assay and reagent development teams
  • Design and develop microfluidic based diagnostic platforms
  • Provide leadership and architectural insights to enable design trade-off decisions
  • Anticipate potential problems that may impact system performance and drive the development and implementation of risk mitigation plans.
  • Lead identification of solutions to complex technical issues by root cause analysis procedure and propose potential design modifications as they pertain to system and assay performance.
  • Verify, validate, and troubleshoot a diagnostic instrument with a system level mindset
  • Manage the interfaces between instrument and reagent disposable devices

 Physical Demands

  • The physical demands require the ability to lift 25 lbs.

 Travel Required

  • Occasional and up to 5% travel

 Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • 6+ years industry experience in life sciences instrumentation, IVD, or medical device space
  • Hands-on experience building and testing electromechanical systems including software, fluidic, mechanical, optical, and thermal control subsystems
  • Track record of developing a technology product through to successful product launch
  • Highly motivated and independent, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Familiarity with PCR and optical detection methods
  • Ability to develop plans and schedules for a complex project and lead them through completion
  • Microfluidics and/or plastic injection molding experience
  • Experienced user of SolidWorks or similar CAD software
  • Understands the use of agile and Scrum methods
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
