The Role:

Moderna is seeking a talented, experienced, and motivated Scientist to join the Clinical Flow Cytometry group to serve as a scientific expert for flow cytometry assay development, qualification/validation to support clinical programs across multiple therapeutic areas.  The Scientist will work with a team of scientists and will be responsible for the design and execution of high parameter spectral flow cytometry assay development, qualification/validation, and the running of clinical samples to deliver high quality, key data for clinical trials conducted by Moderna. The candidate will have broad knowledge of best practices in flow cytometry, experience with spectral cytometry, and a proven record of building robust assays.  The Scientist will effectively communicate across multi-disciplinary teams to contextualize program needs and effectively plan studies to meet data rigor expectations and deliver data within required timelines.  In addition, the candidate will be involved in the training of junior team members when and where needed to perform analytical work and maintain clinical testing continuity.

Here's What You’ll Do:

  • Work with a team of scientists to develop high parameter spectral flow cytometry assays and apply them to clinical trial samples to generate key data for clinical decision making.

  • Plan, organize, and execute assay qualification and fit-for-purpose validation studies

  • Run experiments independently and accurately analyze and present data

  • Conduct ex vivo experimental work for functional profiling of immune system

  • Serve as a lead in the execution of multiple projects requiring flow cytometry expertise

  • Formulate novel solutions, using multiple approaches, including ex vivo assays for the design of complex experiments

  • Research scientific and technical literature to propose and implement new flow assays and/or innovative solutions applicable to the laboratory

  • Work with the team to establish documentation procedures and workflows aligned to clinical cytometry industry expectations and regulations

  • Identify and resolve quality issues, employ mitigation strategies, and escalate issues

  • Identify and work to alleviate bottlenecks in current workflows to increase efficiency

  • Educate and train junior staff in flow cytometry, technical detailed execution of assays, and documentation requirements and workflows where appropriate.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • Ph.D.  or MS with 3+ years of high parameter flow cytometry experience

  • In depth experience running and maintaining flow cytometers such as Cytek Aurora, BD Fortessa/Symphony, etc.

  • Understanding and experience in Spectral flow cytometry

  • In depth experience in establishing complex multiparameter flow cytometry assays including immunophenotyping and ex vivo cell-based assays for functional profiling such as intracellular cytokine staining, cell activation and proliferation, etc.

  • Strong level of understanding and expertise in design and executing immune-related studies and assays

  • Experience with flow cytometry assay fit-for-purpose validation applicable for intended use of data

  • The ability to work in a cross-functional work environment with effective communication skills to contextualize program needs and effectively plan studies to meet data rigor expectations and deliver data within required timelines

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
