JOB TITLE: Principal Project Manger Capital Projects 

LOCATION: Novato, CA

Role

BioMarin’s Technical Operations group (TOPS) is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These individuals build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.

Capital Project Management (CPM) is responsible for managing all aspects of capital projects. Types of projects include, but are not limited to, manufacturing, laboratory, office and warehouse construction. The Principal Project Manager is responsible and accountable for the successful execution of capital projects. The qualification shall be

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and manage capital projects in compliance with BioMarin and industry regulations, standards and best practices
  • Manage the scope, deliverables, schedule, project team and budget for capital expenditure (Capex)
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of RFP and bidder/vendor analysis of equipment and contractors
  • Accountable for the preparation and maintaining of the project schedule and cost reports within Oracle based tools (OPPM and P6) for the use of numerous BioMarin departments
  • Evaluate, prepare, & submit Capex project intake forms for project submission
  • Prepare and present project funding requests and updates to governance committee(s)
  • Support production, maintenance and shutdown activities as they relate to capital projects
  • Oversee training requirements in Compliance Wire for contractors
  • Approve invoices and maintain accountability for monthly accruals/forecast for projects
  • Accountable for facility notices for impacting activities such as power outages, crane picks, etc.
  • Ensure internal employees, consultants & contractors working on any Capex or construction related projects maintain compliance with all quality, EHSS and security requirements
  • Coordinate badge, IM equipment, and seating requests for contractors
  • Represent the CPM and GEFS teams with good communication and presentation skills.
  • Provide regular reporting on Projects to Senior/Executive Directors as required
  • Serve as a principal subject matter expert (SME) across GEFS

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Engineering or related discipline with minimum 15 years’ experience in Engineering and/or Project Management in the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical industry, or equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years of project management experience in a capital project portfolio of at least $50M/year
  • Has successfully delivered complex projects that are 10M + in total project cost.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)®, Program Management Professional (PgMP)® or Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP)® certification preferred
  • Lean/Six Sigma Black Belt or Operational Excellence related certification preferred
  • Experience in procurement role, including general contractor/supplier relationship management, RFI/RFP and bidding management is preferred

  • Ability to work with little or no supervision: meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, provide recommendations and effectively communicate updates
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization from Senior Leadership to technician
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to speak articulately across all levels of the company including Senior Executives

  • Influencing and partnering skills: Proven ability to build and leverage productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Strong organizational planning, and understanding of portfolio management concepts Demonstrated self-motivator and proactive in managing long-term or on-going development projects in balance with daily routine
  • Excellent problem solving, decision making and cross functional team building skills.
  • Penchant for an environment rich in constant change and conflicting requirements and proven ability to deal with the ambiguity that may arise from rapid pace of change
  • An eye for incorporating a lean methodology and continuous improvement, and adhering to best practices
  • Solid understanding of GMP and R&D project requirements
  • Able to read and understand architectural and engineering plans and specifications
  • Good understand of construction contract types, construction processes
  • Should be flexible to working outside the core business hours (occasionally on short notice, and a limited basis) as needed
  • Must be proficient with Internet navigation, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, Teams, SharePoint), Adobe Acrobat
  • Familiarity with Oracle Primavera P6
