The Corporate Controllers organization providesfinancial information for Pfizer Inc. to management, shareholders, and regulators. In addition to the consolidation and analysis ofthe monthly financial submissions from businesses around the globe and internal/external financial reporting, the Controllersorganization is responsible fordeveloping and maintainingaccounting policies and guidance,ensuring adequatefinancialcontrols are in place, and addressing the ever-changingbusiness and regulatory requirements for accounting and financial reporting. To meet these needsthe Controller Organization is an active partner with the worldwide finance leaders and operational groups within the company, advising on theappropriate accounting and financial reporting for ongoing, new and proposed operational activities and/or a variety of strategic business development transactions enabling Pfizer’s mission to bring breakthroughs that change patients lives. Additionally, Corporate Controllers is actively involved in influencing the regulatory environment byinterfacing withgovernment and financial organizations such as the SEC and the FASB.

The Director, Accounting Advisory Services (Business Development) role is part of the Accounting Advisory Services group within the Controllers organization. The primary responsibilities of this position are to assess proposed transactions, provide accounting/finance advice, propose and influence negotiating terms and lead accounting financial due diligence in collaboration with the World Wide Business Development Group, Commercial and other internal Finance groups, Tax, Legal, etc. on strategic initiatives, such as acquisitions and divestitures, collaborations, licensing and development arrangements, out-licensing and other externalization strategies, strategic investments, joint venture proposals, etc. Work with Business Development deal teams to provide guidance on the financial statement impacts for proposed conventional and complex BD transactions and collaborate on alternative deal structures. Work with Commercial and PGS Finance to provide guidance on accounting, financial reporting and proposed deal structures for COVID-19 agreements with Project Lightspeed. Research of accounting issues, industry/regulator views and document conclusions in formal memos and white papers and draft functional endorsements of business development transactions and novel COVID-19 agreements to enable informed decisions by the ELT and ensure compliance with corporate guidelines. Provide insight and input beyond accounting focus areas. This role will report to the Senior Director, Accounting Advisory Services (Business Development).

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall specific responsibilities could include:

  • Identify and analyze the accounting and reporting issues and financial statement impact of acquisitions, out-licensing and divestitures, collaborations, in-licensing and development arrangements, strategic investments and joint ventures, by reviewing proposals, term sheets, contracts and other related documents and holding discussions with appropriate Company personnel.
  • Participate in due diligence process and highlight accounting issues and key risks to World Wide Business Development.
  • Research accounting issues using on-line accounting research tools and document conclusions in formal memos, or position papers.
  • Prepare draft functional endorsements for business development transactions to ensure compliance with governance process over business development transactions.
  • Ensure accuracy of BD accounting, disclosure & controls, including COVID related contracts
  • Participate in training sessions on impact of new accounting pronouncements on business development transactions to World Wide Business Development, Legal Division Transactions Group, and Commercial and other internal Finance Groups.
  • Partner with Controller peers to support acquisition accounting and integration/de-integration of approved BD transactions
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge and meet continuing professional education requirements by attending educational workshops and conferences.

Leadership/Management

  • Build strong collaborative relationships, open transparent communication, and effective partnership and coordination with global stakeholders
  • Work as a team member and assist others in Controllers/Finance in navigating issues and providing guidance with regards to execution or implementation of accounting and financial reporting related items within their respective areas of responsibility.

Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in US GAAP, SEC Rules and FASB standards
  • Demonstrated experience with technical accounting research; experience understanding, interpreting and applying US GAAP and SEC accounting rules, including complex technical accounting areas with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, collaborative arrangements, research and development arrangements, in-licensing and out-licensing, consolidations, investments and joint ventures, equity-method accounting and revenue recognition

BASIC REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • 10-15+ years’ relevant work experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills enabling effective communication with all levels of management; able to communicate complex concepts in a concise manner; ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Strong analytical skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICAITONS:

  • MBA or advanced degree in finance or accounting
  • Demonstrated proficiency in US GAAP and SEC rules; strong technical and analytical accounting skills; knowledge of standard setter processes
  • Experience working across multiple levels (including executive level), functions and regions
  • Combined public accounting and private industry experience in Mergers & Acquisitions
  • Life Science industry experience
