General Scope and Summary

SAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, resourceful, integrative thinker for an important role as a(n) Associate Director/Principal Scientist, Discovery Synthetic Chemist. This candidate will collaborate closely with contract research organizations and internal stakeholders to ensure rapid and efficient target syntheses that support lead optimization and IND-enabling phases of small-molecule drug discovery. Additionally, the candidate will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and demonstrate strong managerial and organization skills. A strong track record in drug discovery, organic synthesis, and chemistry team leadership is essential. The role requires an individual with a proven track record of delivering innovative solutions to synthetic chemistry challenges and an exceptional grasp of the entire interdisciplinary drug discovery process from lead generation through IND-enablement. Additionally, the candidate will have demonstrated highly tuned people management, organizational, and decision-making skills.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and execute efficient medicinal chemistry–scale synthetic chemistry strategies at various CROs. 

  • Optimize medicinal chemistry syntheses to enable efficient use of resources.

  • Initiate scale-up syntheses of common intermediates and lead compounds in support of the medicinal chemistry platform.

  • Track compound inventories at various CRO partners.

  • Establish partnering strategies and effectively plan resource allocation to achieve portfolio milestones.

  • Provide scientific and managerial leadership in an outsourced medicinal/process chemistry environment.

  • Interface with the CMC/Pharmaceutical Development team to ensure developable synthetic routes.

  • Interact and contribute to internal multidisciplinary drug discovery project teams.

  • Provide timely and well-organized reports to project teams and senior management team forums. 

  • Collaborate effectively with the leadership team and other departmental managers and functions.

Education, Experience and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent in synthetic organic chemistry.

  • 7+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry with a strong track record of scientific innovation. A professional background focused on synthetic route design and methodology optimization is ideal.

  • 5+ years of experience managing CROs or external research partnerships in a virtual environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of the entire drug R&D processes, expertise in organic synthesis, and CMC is essential.

  • Comfort managing research projects in matrixed environment.
