Position Summary

The Sr Lab Automation Engineer will be collaborating with others in Resilience to develop automation solutions. You will design, implement, and support our R&D into breakthroughs in biomanufacturing processes and our in-house instrument development supporting personalized medicine. This role will be a key team contributor applying extensive knowledge of design principles and implementing complex automation solutions. General responsibilities include design concept generation, participating in and leading design reviews, developing and testing the work cell/solution. This is a high-impact technical lead role where you will collaborate across teams and provide an opportunity to lead the architecture and roadmap in executing and developing automation solutions.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with experimental scientists to gather experimental workflow requirements to enable translating processes into automated workflows

  • Work with internal stakeholders to identify future equipment needs

  • Work within the team to identify and work with integration partners for future larger-scale solutions

  • Create protocols/scripts to control automated lab equipment (liquid handling platforms / robotic arms / incubators etc.)

  • Continuoulsy improve workflows identifying areas of increased throughput and transition them from manual to semi-automated to fully automated.

  • Understand what scientific risks a particular automation protocol may have and communicate those to scientific team members can monitor outputs/results accordingly (e.g., edge effects on a temperature block, shear stress with automated pipette tips of different orifices than in manual workflows)

  • Code software workflows to connect automation equipment to/from LIMS and other Cloud resources

  • Create and analyze Process Diagrams for workflows to increase robustness and identify potential points for improvement

  • Work assisting the operation of core automation resources: train users to repair instrument issues and apply continuous improvement principles to increase uptime at a reduced cost.

  • Contribute to the establishment of the group and individual objectives, priorities, and metrics

Experience & Qualifications:

  • BSc/MS: 10+ years of experience or Ph.D.: 5+ years of experience in an engineering or biological discipline

  • Minimum of 8 years developing automation solutions in biological laboratories

  • Experience developing automation solutions from early-stage concept to optimized, automated workflow.

  • Experience automating at least two of the following: NGS library prep, cell culture, cell-based assays, molecular biology, small-scale (>1L) bioreactors

  • Highly skilled in automating microplate workflows: pick and place, peel/seal, hit picking, miniaturization to 384/1536 well

  • Familiarity with quantitative process development skills, including DoE, SPC, and CpK.

  • Familiarity with Python or a similar object-oriented programming language

  • Familiarity with mechanical CAD software (Solidworks) for creating custom adapters/holders.

  • Excellent organizational skills; Able to manage multiple fast-paced projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally across various technical disciplines with a broad slate of stakeholders, including management, peers, and suppliers.

  • The initiative, curiosity, a bias for action, and a problem-solving attitude, and desire to bring innovative, simplified solutions to complex problems

  • Some background knowledge in molecular biology, cell biology, Next Generation Sequencing, wet-lab experimental procedures, and data analysis is a plus.
