Job Details

Uniquely positioned to enhance quality of life in aging, at Alkahest, we are pioneering science that is rapidly being translated to the clinic. Our approaches utilize multi-omics techniques to identify new therapeutics and apply them to patients.

The field of genomics is revolutionizing drug discovery. Indeed, drug targets with genetic support are twice likely to be approved. When causal genes are clear, the approval likelihood is even greater than two-fold. During the last few years, most of the evidence came from genome wide associations studies (GWAS) but recently, Mendelian Randomization (MR) gained a lot of interest. MR uses genetic variation as a natural experiment to investigate the causal relations between potentially modifiable risk factors such as plasma proteins levels and health outcomes. We are seeking a highly motivated computational biologist genomics to lead, advise and assist in the data analysis, interpretation and integration of large-scale GWAS and MR. These studies will involve cutting edge science and the efforts of this role will be pivotal in advancing our therapeutic capabilities. The role requires dedication, flexibility, excellent communication, and organization to successfully drive the science and achieve Alkahest’s corporate mission. This position reports to the Director of Data Science.

Alkahest offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, annual bonus, potential opportunities for career growth and development, and a work environment that is collaborative, collegial and lots of fun.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and visualize GWAS and MR data using published or custom scripts.
  • Identify and develop optimal algorithms and workflows to analyze GWAS and MR datasets, separately and integratively.
  • Identify and integrate relevant external datasets to aid in the analysis and interpretation of internal data
  • Ensure completeness, critical evaluation, correctness and integrity of analyses and datasets
  • Engage external resources to apply cutting edge methodologies and ensure recognition in the scientific community including publications
  • Interact and collaborate with data scientists and team members on daily basis
  • Serve as bioinformatics specialist to support research and development focusing on Alkahest's genomics efforts
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or related field applied to biological data. Proven track record with publications, demonstrating mastery of both computational analysis and biology.
  • Significant experience (4+ years) in analyzing and modeling GWAS and MR data.
  • Willing to take on exploratory novel methods. Creative problem solving with the ability to think outside-of-the-box.
  • Demonstrated deep knowledge of system biology principles, tools, and databases
  • Creative and collaborative team spirit and the ability to self-motivate and work independently
  • Research experience in neuroscience or aging is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, following best practices, in particular documentation
  • Solid experience working on the command line using bash and shell scripting
  • Demonstrated skills in Python and R
  • Comfortable working in a multi-tasked, fast-paced environment
Applicants and new hires are subject to the Company’s Mandatory Vaccination Policy.

Company

At Alkahest, we strive to lead the way towards effective therapies for patients suffering from diseases associated with the detrimental processes of aging. We believe that as an industry, we simply haven’t done enough to help drive solutions for the most under-treated and devastating diseases affecting this growing demographic. We want to help.

Aging is the dominant risk factor in degenerative diseases. Many of the pressing age-related and neurodegenerative diseases have a profound impact on patients and their caregivers, yet have very limited treatment options. Alkahest has embarked upon a simple but elegant approach to treat disorders of aging by capitalizing on the body’s own natural regulatory and communication mechanisms, leveraging the plasma proteome. The promise of this science, and the potential to make a difference to patients around the world, was the founding principle of Alkahest.

For all of the great progress we have made so far, we credit our dedicated and impassioned team for driving our successes. Our culture is warm and supportive, genuine and ethical, rigorous and scientific, and collaborative yet entrepreneurial. Based in Silicon Valley, home to many leaders in the biotechnology industry, the heart of our culture is scientific innovation. We work hard, yet we have fun while we’re doing so. We are passionate about both our collegial atmosphere as well as working together on cutting-edge therapies that will change the lives of patients. We know we have a lot further to go, and we’re ready for the long haul.
