Director, GSS Sourcing Excellence


What you will do

In this vital role as a leader within the Global Strategic Sourcing (GSS) team, this Director of GSS, Sourcing Excellence, will be responsible for leading an organization of ~30 strategic sourcing professionals supporting our Global Category Management vertical teams. In this capacity, the leader will be responsible for driving a healthy culture, career development, capacity management and continuous improvement of the process, technologies, and capabilities across the team. This leader will partner with peers across the Global Strategic Sourcing organization to deliver effective sourcing solutions, enterprise productivity and promote GSS as a preferred company for Sourcing talent.

Primary Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director of GSS, this leader is responsible for the following:

  • Champion and lead the Sourcing Excellence capability and team for North America
  • Capability and process development across RFX, negotiation and contracting skills for the Sourcing Excellence team.
  • Represent GSS as a member of the SLT for the ACC (Amgen Capability Center)
  • Maintain and build a culture of diversity and inclusion across all dimensions including staff, suppliers and other external outreach
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement and maturing of Global Strategic Sourcings tools and operating model
  • Drive a culture of compliance
  • Develop/build external relationships and engage in targeted outreach to support our talent pipeline, local community building and professional development

Strategic Contribution
  • Develop and manage a talent pipeline for the organization
  • Be a trusted advisor to leaders of GSS, the ACC, Finance and other internal clients
  • Drive for innovation and efficiencies across the process to deliver improved outcomes, faster.
  • Be a sourcing expert with strong financial acumen
  • Serve as a thought partner and actively challenge work to deploy the most comprehensive and creative solutions; remove barriers for team to ensure its ability to execute

Leadership / People Development
  • Strong coach and talent manager in helping to develop direct reports
  • Managerial courage to provide performance feedback
  • Develop goals and prioritize team's work among multiple initiatives

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree and 4 years of directly related strategic sourcing experience


Masters degree and 8 years of directly related strategic sourcing experience


Bachelors degree and 10 years of directly related strategic sourcing experience


4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Diverse Global Sourcing/Procurement experience within and/or external to the Pharma industry
  • Broad knowledge of the market forces crafting a customers business context (e.g. supplier base, legal and regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and using a full set of sourcing levers to drive value for customers
  • Ability to conduct benchmarking to address cost, quality, risk and innovation considerations
  • Ability to provide thought leadership and actively craft strategy within and external to GSS
Team Management & Change Management
  • Independent self-starter and able to motivate others to accomplish ambiguous tasks
  • Ability to lead teams in a matrix organization, across geographic and functional reporting lines
  • Ability to lead, coach, and mentor direct reports
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying root causes to issues and proactively problem solving
  • Change management experience with large and complex organizational transformations
  • Demonstrated success in partnering cross-functionally
  • Ability to own and strengthen relationships with key customers and to champion change
  • Compelling and persuasive communicator (oral and written) with excellent interpersonal skills
Analytical & Technical
  • Knowledge of Category Strategy Development, Sourcing, contract negotiations, and supplier relationship management
  • Strong understanding of best practices in Global Sourcing and Procurement
  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and present insights based on the needs of the audience
  • Ability to develop business cases and champion opportunities with quantifiable financial benefits
