About the role

Sana Biotechnology is growing, and we are hiring new team members who believe in the potential of engineered cells as medicines, who want to challenge status quo, and who lead with the desire to work on novel ideas. As a Process Engineer, you will develop novel allogeneic chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR T) cell manufacturing processes and report to the Sr. Director of Cell Therapy Process Development. You will lead the design of multiple unit operations including cell isolation, expansion, lentiviral transduction, gene editing, and harvest/formulation. You will collaborate with diverse teams including Analytical Development, Research, and Technical Sciences.

What you'll do

  • Draft development plans, design, and execute small- and large-scale cell therapy experiments across multiple unit operations including cell isolation, expansion, gene editing, harvest, and formulation
  • Analyze data, present conclusions, and propose process design recommendations to a diverse group
  • Draft technical documents including reports, operating procedures, master batch records, and bioreactor recipes
  • Document all experimental work in an electronic laboratory notebook
  • Demonstrate curiosity and apply scientific rigor to solve cell therapy process challenges

What we're looking for

  • BSc. in Chemical, Biological, or Biomedical Engineering plus 4 yrs or MSc plus 2 yrs or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • >2 years of experience with mammalian cell culture
  • Excellent aseptic cell culture technique and good scientific method
  • Experience summarizing data and drafting technical reports

What will separate you from the crowd

  • You contributed to the design of a clinical cell therapy manufacturing process including:
    • Cell isolation
    • T cell culture
    • Viral and non-viral gene editing methods
    • Cell washing and harvesting
  • You have knowledge of immunology with focus on T cells
  • You understand statistical Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • You participated in tech transfers to external partners
  • You operated small to mid-scale bioreactors (ambr 15, stirred tank and rocking motion bioreactors) including drafting recipes
  • You performed cell counts with automated cell counters and spent media analysis
What you should know
  • This role includes handling of human blood products from healthy donors
  • Some weekend work
  • Approximately 50% of your time spent in a laboratory environment
  • Working safely in person on a predictable and regular in-person basis is an essential job function for this position, and the Company requires that all individuals working in-person be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including receipt of a vaccine booster shot if recommended by the CDC
