Job Details
Mammoth is currently seeking a creative and skilled Automation Engineer I/II/III with experience in high throughput automation in the biotechnology industry to join our Discovery team. This engineer will work collaboratively and cross-functionally with the team to develop, deploy, and sustain our high throughput automation platform as well as integrate and sustain experimental workflows on this platform to empower the discovery, characterization, and development of novel Cas nucleases for genome editing.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with a variety of automation instruments used in life sciences research and a record of successfully applying their capabilities to scale up the throughput of experiments in genomics, cell and molecular biology, phenotype screening, and cell culture. They will interact closely with Scientists and Research Associates working on a variety of experimental methods in CRISPR-Cas biology. They will also work with our automation engineer on support and continued development of our high throughput platform. The candidate should have at least a foundational background knowledge in life sciences.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and creative engineer to contribute to development of cutting-edge CRISPR technologies by helping the team effectively leverage automation capabilities to meet its scientific needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and sustain our high throughput automation platform
- Develop and deploy scripts in various softwares operating the robots
- Work with internal software team to develop and implement sample and data tracking infrastructure
- Develop safety and operations (hardware + software) training materials for end users and conduct training
- Provide users with troubleshooting and recovery support
- Work with process development personnel to develop, test, and deploy workflows
- Help scope and plan for future capability and platform expansions based on internal technical needs and projections
- Interact and develop productive working relationships with vendors
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical, chemical, industrial, or bioengineering) or the biological sciences with 2+ years of relevant experience
- 1+ years of experience as an automation engineer in the biotechnology industry deploying and sustaining liquid handling robots such as Tecan Freedom Evo or Fluent, Labycte Echo, etc.
- Experience in writing, troubleshooting, and optimizing scripts in automation software (e.g. Tecan EVOware, FluentControl)
- Experience and working knowledge in using project management methodologies and tools for sustaining support of automation platforms
- Communication skills and attention to detail
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD or master’s degree in engineering (mechanical, chemical, industrial, or bioengineering)
- 5 years of experience as automation engineer in a biotechnology company
- Experience scoping, developing, implementing, and supporting high throughput automated workflows in nucleic acid production/extraction, microbial strain engineering, and/or mammalian cell culture
- Deep working knowledge and experience in Tecan liquid handlers
- Experience developing and implementing tracking infrastructure (for errors, crashes, requests, etc.) as part of sustaining automation support
- Experience developing and effectively using KPIs and other metrics to ensure platform and workflow health
- Working knowledge and experience in SQL and databases for sample and data management
- Working knowledge and experience with quantitative data analysis and tools such as JMP, R, SAS, etc.
- Working knowledge and experience with Benchling
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment working collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds (e.g. biochemists, molecular biologists, bioengineers, software engineers, project managers, etc.) to scope, develop, and implement solutions

TEAM
Our small-size proteins, such as Cas14 and CasPhi, are poised to transform disease treatment enabling novel editing approaches and delivery options that are difficult to achieve or not even possible with previously described CRISPR-Cas systems.
