SCIENTIST I, CELL BIOLOGY

Position Summary:

We are looking for a Scientist I with expertise in cell biology, assay development, and a passion to understand mechanisms of disease. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team and support our drug discovery effort by investigating cellular models of human hemoglobinopathies to elucidate the mechanisms underlying various disease manifestations. He or she will be a key contributor to the build out of our in-house functional genomics platform through developing and executing bespoke cell-based assays to enable genome-wide target identification and validation. The candidate will play a key strategic role in identifying and applying techniques and methods to profile the effect of genomic and small-molecule agents in cellular models of disease, supporting early research and drug discovery programs. Major responsibilities will include independent, hands-on experimental work to guide ongoing and novel drug discovery efforts. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, working autonomously with a variety of techniques, and comfortable presenting results to cross-functional teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Independently plan, execute, and analyze experiments
  • Investigate cellular models of disease to drive early target and drug discovery projects
  • Leverage cell-based assays to evaluate target and drug candidates
  • Establish novel cell models and assays to suit research needs

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or a related field with 2+ years of related experience, or BS or MS with 4+ years of laboratory experience
  • Deep experience in mammalian cell culture (adherent and suspension cells), fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and microscopy
  • Demonstrated ability to develop robust and scalable assays using cell-based models
  • Experience in CRISPR/Cas9 genome-wide screening and genome editing to investigate disease-relevant mechanistic biology and/or target identification and validation
  • Special consideration given for candidates with expertise in erythroid biology or differentiation of iPSC/CD34+ cell models
  • Hands-on experience with genomics technologies such as transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and/or scRNA-seq is a plus
  • Ability to work independently as well as contribute actively to an integrated team
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver solutions by systematic troubleshooting, creative/critical thinking, high degree of accuracy and attention to details
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (oral, written, presentation)

Fit with GBT culture:

  • Ability to build strong relationships with co-workers of various backgrounds and expertise
  • Ability to function at a high level in a team setting whether leading the group or acting as an individual contributor
  • Values-based leadership consistent with GBT's Core Values
  • Excitement about the vision and mission of GBT
  • Flexibility
  • Integrity
