About the role

Sana Biotechnology is growing, and we are hiring new team members who believe in the potential of engineered cells as medicines, who want to challenge status quo, and who lead with the desire to work on novel ideas. As the Executive Director, Research Informatics, you will report to the SVP of IT and will provide leadership across technical domains that include data warehouse, research data infrastructure systems, research applications, and data ingestion and integration to enable our company-wide initiatives on data strategy and data management. 

What you’ll do

  • Lead and develop the research informatics (or data infrastructure) roadmap to support our overall business objectives, in close partnership with the Head of Digital Strategy and Head of IT and other key business stakeholders
  • Build and manage (directly or indirectly) a team of LIMS developers, engineers and business analysts (FTEs, contractors, professional services) to understand system requirements, deploy systems, and ensure that proper methods are used for data collection and are compliant with regulatory requirements and align with best industry practices, standards, and guidelines
  • Establish the minimal viable product and create timelines and workflows that prioritize critical functionality in partnership with key stakeholders
  • Direct the implementation and customization of electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), sample registry and tracking, and other scientific data capture and document management application
  • Develop appropriate data models to support gene and cell therapies requirements for each data management system
  • Continue to evaluate, maintain, and direct improvements to the data infrastructure, including transition plans and mitigations for feature sunsetting
  • Ensure integration of the data infrastructure to allow data linking and tracking across systems in a reproducible, consistent and traceable manner
  • Drive the value of data management systems by continuous improvement in the areas of workflow efficiencies, instrument and data integration
  • Work with stakeholders to gather requirements, architect and build a data lake for internal and external data to enable meta-analyses
  • Demonstrate ability to engage and effectively influence team members across multidisciplinary teams while prioritizing multiple projects and meeting deadlines
  • Drive curiosity, scientific rigor and excellent problem-solving skills across a fast-paced performance-driven environment
  • Natural ability to assess talent to help grow the organization and add to Sana's culture

What we’re looking for

  • BS plus 15 years or equivalent combination of education and work experience with 8+ years of informatics/data infrastructure experience in pharma/biotech
  • Familiarity with pharma/biotech-appropriate cloud-based and non-cloud-based software solutions for LIMS, ELN, data and document management, and other development-appropriate systems
  • Experience with being the architect and deployment of system solutions according to FAIR data principles and ALCOA standards
  • Proven track record of translating research and scientific business requirements into operational strategies
  • Previous experience leading and implementing key strategic R&D informatics initiatives and activities
  • Experience with Benchling
  • Successful development, deployment and adoption of data models across multiple R&D informatics systems
  • Experience managing a team of 4 or more full-time employees with varying levels of experience
  • Can communicate a clear vision among direct reports and cross-functional teams, aligning resources, and motivating teams to achieve goals. Must also effectively communicate with colleagues and associates at all levels to create partnership-style relationships
  • Able to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Known for meeting timelines and ability to articulate and communicate delays in timelines

What will separate you from the crowd

  • Experience with LabVantage
  • Experience with tracking and capturing in vivo nonclinical studies and CRO data ingestion
  • Knowledge of standard lab instruments and cell- and molecular-based assays
  • Cell and gene therapy experience
