The Hematologic Neoplasia (HN) Division is one of the largest divisions within the Department of Medical Oncology. The Division includes 58 faculty, 56 research scientists, 116 research fellows, and 191 additional research staff who are members of 24 independent research groups. The Operations Manager will be responsible for facilitating HN research operations for 53,000 square feet of wet lab space across 5 independent locations on the DFCI campus. The Operations Manager will assist the investigative groups with laboratory, administration, core facilities and equipment maintenance and training of technical staff to ensure good laboratory practice. 

Responsibilities:

Laboratory Operations

  • Design Hematologic Neoplasia (HN) division procedures to ensure smooth operations and compliance with Institute policy in areas of materials and general facilities management, laboratory safety (EH&S, Radiation and OPRS), and human resources.
  • Collaborate with HN investigators to assess short and long-range needs regarding research technologies and facilities.
  • Assist in strategic planning, space analysis and facilities reorganization.
  • Supervise the management of shared scientific equipment, storage facilities (freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks) and core support areas.
  • Oversee the care, repair, and maintenance of laboratory equipment for each lab as well as core equipment for the division.
  • Support research staff in obtaining assistance, renovation, or repairs from the Maintenance Department.
  • Institute, maintain, and improve standard procedures for laboratory and division efficiencies, including monitoring expenditures and negotiating pricing.
  • Process shared use floor orders including developer chemicals, copy papers, liquid nitrogen and media in bulk quantities.
  • Oversee efficient inventory maintenance and ordering.
  • Oversee radioactive materials monitoring and inventory documentation in the HN radioactive room.
  • Ensure clear corridors and support safety office on matters related to lab, fire, and biosafety.
  • Ensure good laboratory practice directly or indirectly through supervised activities of technicians and trainees.
  • Oversee lab coat maintenance and distribution.

Scientific Operations

  • Assist PIs in monitoring, enabling, and facilitating collaborations with other programs.
  • Active intellectual involvement in research projects encouraged.
  • Familiarity with the management of mice colonies, including genotyping and breeding of multiple strains.
  • Familiarity with core lab procedures.
  • Familiarity with large data sets and associated storage requirements.
  • Provide scientific input on central equipment purchases and maintenance and laboratory operational services.

 Administrative

  • Responsible for managing efficient and effective administration of laboratory protocols and research materials/stocks.
  • Train and manage staff scientists and research technicians and guide recruitment of technical staff in association with PIs.
  • Assist PIs with counseling, teaching, training, mentoring, orientation, in-service and continuing education for laboratory staff and trainees.
  • Ensure all lab staff are compliant with DFCI, NIH and sponsor mandatory trainings. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee two autoclave/glass washer rooms.
  • Address operational needs of lab members in each lab within the Division of Hematologic Neoplasia.
  • Manage the Core Facilities in the HN division including equipment, liquid nitrogen, dry ice, two lentivirus tissue culture rooms, freezers, two copiers and cell culture media.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline required; master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in management of research laboratories in the field of biological sciences.
  • Familiarity with cancer research laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, safety, compliance, and record keeping.
  • Strong knowledge of HR activities and solid writing skills preferred.
  • Experience managing mouse colonies preferred.
  • Exceptional people management and organization skills, with demonstrated ability to multi-task to enable many concurrent projects in a complex, fast paced environment.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytic, and problem-solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a problem opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability and willingness to work closely with other colleagues as a team; experience and comfort in working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and differing viewpoints and openness to new ideas.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
