The Role

Reporting to Senior Director, Research & Technical Operations Strategy, the Associate Director/Director, Business Operations Strategy facilitates transformative initiatives within and across the Research & Technical Operations (RTO) organization to improve how we deliver innovative gene therapy medicines to patients. These improvement programs include internal initiatives ranging from organizational changes, process improvement, and platform improvements and implementation. This position also ensures alignment of these cross functional initiatives within RTO's and across the organization's forward-looking business strategy.

This position is responsible for leading cross-functional business improvement projects within RTO by understanding business processes, organizational models, business information, business issues and system implications. The position will work with cross-functional subject matter experts to develop business cases, lead design discussions, define business requirements, and lead implementation to address gaps and/or new operational business opportunities with the intention to continuously iterate our approach in making data-driven decision.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead cross-functional teams through the design and implementation of internal improvement projects aiming to improve organizational models, processes, and systems. The candidate will also partner with peers and subject matter experts to identify, share, and incorporate best practices into future iterations of processes, tools, training and/or guidance. Broadcasting progress on goals, initiatives, etc. to the organization at all levels is essential. This includes:

  • Facilitating and managing a cross-functional team to deliver new organizational models, sustainable processes, and technology solutions that are fit for business.

  • Leading the identification, assessment and documentation of business requirements for IT systems using appropriate documentation standards.

  • Developing options analyses with feasibility and impact assessments to solve current state business challenges.

  • Lead implementation, ensuring the business needs are translated appropriately into system requirements, training materials, and the business-as-usual support model (e.g. dashboards).

  • Partnering with business leadership to turn ideas into tangible outputs by drafting measurable deliverables and overseeing team members in completing deliverables.

  • Ensuring changes have been successfully embedded within the business, including roles & responsibilities, business processes, and systems.

  • Ensuring post-implementation reviews occur to examine the benefits defined in the business case and evaluate whether the benefits have been achieved.

  • Proactively assess and mitigate risks.

  • Lead the development and implementation of a change management strategy and learning plan to ensure sustainable model.

  • Act as liaison between business SMEs, central operational support teams, technology team and finance.

  • Understand and oversee team member execution of the system development life-cycle process for system related projects.

  • Developing and leveraging strong partnerships with stakeholders in the establishment of excellence in business operations and incorporating best practices and effective root cause analysis into future iterations of process, tools, training or guidance.

  • Leading the strategic assessment of continuous improvement within the business.

  • Lead matrixed teams, managing as a peer leader within the organization and collaborating to ensure success of the strategic objectives.

Quantitative Dimensions:

Responsible for evaluating and quantifying opportunities to improve productivity and to maximize efficiency in business execution. Responsible for budget and timelines associated with assigned initiatives. Responsible for developing business cases with quantifiable and measurable benefits. May provide oversight and management of vendors or contractors working on a project, as applicable.

About you

Must Have/Required

  • BA/BS

  • Minimum 10 years of related experience and/or experience in management consulting focused on clinical development, medical, product safety, or regulatory submissions.

  • Strong understanding of the global drug development processes and business processes and procedures to ensure cross-functional connections and operational processes are appropriately and effectively developed and communicated across the organization.

  • Knowledge of enterprise-wide pharmaceutical software solutions and application in industry; strong knowledge of assigned software solution.

  • Experience delivering transformational change through leadership of business improvement projects.

  • Proven track record of facilitating process optimization and process change initiatives in a cross-functional setting.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, in English, with an ability to interact at all levels of personnel.

  • Experience working cross-functionally and cross-culturally in support of business processes and/or systems, especially as they impact and influence multiple departments and levels of management.

  • Strong and effective strategic thinker and problem solver with high degree of emotional intelligence, with the ability to both recognize and anticipate problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate solutions into viable action plans at a global level that are effectively disseminated and implemented through cooperation of stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build business relationships and influence without authority as part of a matrix organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects efficiently.

May Have/Preferred

  • Advanced degree, MS or PhD or equivalent

  • Experience with software development life cycle and/or computer system validation procedures
