Job Description

The Field Team Leader (FTL) is a scientifically trained and experienced professional who is recognized for their respective TA expertise, people management abilities, and leadership qualities. Under the direction of the Field Team Director (FTD) and in seamless alignment with the respective therapeutic area (TA) Medical Director(s), the FTL contributes to the development and implementation of the TA scientific strategy and activities and provides direct oversight to the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team with the main responsibility to ensure achievement of organizational, TA, and individual performance objectives. This role is critical to working with the MSL and internal Medical Affairs colleagues in establishing, fostering, and maintaining educational and research collaborations with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and other investigators and academic institutions. The FTL evaluates and plans activities that drive positive team member engagement and retention of talent. The FTL interfaces cross-functionally with internal stakeholders to ensure that opportunities requiring medical-scientific involvement are proficiently addressed with effective initiatives. The FTL maintains proactive and responsible communication with these stakeholders as it relates to MSL activities and outcomes that support the achievement of corporate objectives.

Responsibilities:

Oversees and effectively manages direct reports in areas that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Recruitment, selection and retention of talent
  • Annual objective setting
  • Mid-year and end-year performance reviews
  • Provide and assure completion of appropriate training
  • Mentorship
  • Establish a productive, positive, and motivating work environment
  • Coach and counsel as appropriate
  • MSL individual professional growth & development
  • Manage, direct, and evaluate performance on an ongoing basis. Providing timely constructive feedback to ensure quality of work meets or exceeds performance expectations
  • Assure work is completed in a customer-focused, competent, and compliant manner
  • Assure prudent and compliant use of travel, expense, and company car resources by MSLs towards meeting field budget forecasts

  • Establishes clear communication and understanding of the TA/product vision and scientific plan among MSL team members and leads them in the execution of strategies through personal and virtual interactions with KOLs, Healthcare Practitioners (HCPs), independent investigators, and key academic institutions that build product awareness and advocacy, drive education, generate pharmacoeconomic value, obtain advisory, plan publications, and support research.
  • Works closely with Medical Affairs TA Leadership to develop and implement scientific (HLR) strategies and tactical plans.
  • Leverages expertise to engage KOLs and evaluate new scientific information to assess the impact on CSL Behring products and therapies within a regional, national and/or global context, and implements MSL field activities that foster appropriate research, education, and safe and appropriate us of CSL products.
  • Ensures efficient exchange of scientific information and competitive insights between the field and office-based experts (e.g. Medical Affairs, R&D, Clinical Development, and Drug Safety team members) so that key clinical, safety and research issues and opportunities are realized and help shape research, development, and life-cycle strategies for investigational and commercialized products.
  • Establishes and provides comprehensive educational resources to ensure MSLs build and maintain current scientific expertise via attendance at relevant symposium, scientific workshops, key journal article reviews, team training plans/activities, required internal training, and presentations.
  • Ensures optimal cross-functional collaboration and allocates MSL resources for medical and educational support to the field and KOP-based Commercial organizations in compliance with applicable policies.
  • Ensures field compliance with all relevant corporate policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Supports the FTD and interfaces with other Medical Affairs Leaders to identify and institute projects that enhance Medical Affairs infrastructure, improve MSL training & development, and standardize best practices that increase efficiencies and proficiencies and minimize costs.
  • Maintains scientific expertise through ongoing education including attendance at relevant symposium, scientific workshops, journal surveillance; and where applicable, participation in required internal training and presentations.

Education: Doctoral level degree in a Medical and or scientific field (MD, DO or equivalent, PharmD, or PhD) Doctoral level degree in a medical and or scientific field (MD, DO or equivalent, PharmD, or PhD) with strong scientific, clinical, and leadership background is preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years in pharmaceutical or healthcare industry is required
  • A strong Medical Affairs background with previous MSL experience supporting TA-related products/devices, including KOL development, facilitation of investigator-initiated trials, publication development, and educational program support is highly preferred
  • Previous MSL or other relevant healthcare management experience
