Director, Cost Accounting


PacBio has an exciting opportunity for a Director, Cost Accounting.  Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. (NASDAQ: PACB) is helping scientists forge a better understanding of biology by providing a unique long-read sequencing technology that generates more complete and accurate data, giving them more insights. Our sequencing systems allow scientists to characterize genomes, transcriptomes, and epigenomes from any organism. Scientists use our technology in areas such as human biomedical research, plant and animal sciences, and microbiology and infectious disease studies. The Role & The Team

PacBio is looking for a Director of Cost Accounting with deep knowledge of cost accounting and inventory principles. This role is responsible for establishing policies and framework around cost and inventory management, analyzing costs and sharing recommendations with management. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this person will work closely with FP&A for annual budgeting, quarterly forecasting and monthly close reporting.  This position requires strong leadership and presentation ability, cost accounting expertise, an analytical mindset, critical thinking, adaptability, organizational and task management skills. The Director of Cost Accounting will work in partnership with cross functional teams such as FP&A, procurement, engineering, manufacturing, ERP/applications, and accounting teams to perform in-depth cost analysis.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the framework and internal policies to determine manufacturing costs and report on standard costs to actual production costs
  • Lead all areas of cost accounting in financial close process to ensure high level of accuracy and reliable data, including the assessment of inventory reserves
  • Responsible for Internal Controls, including establishing and maintaining procedures to ensure accurate recording, measurement, and reporting of Manufacturing activities and inventory.  Participate in inventory counts and monitor cycle counts
  • Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, including direct supervision of cost accounting team members
  • Partner with and provide analytical support to FP&A, Manufacturing, Procurement, Supply Chain and R&D teams on new initiatives that drive productivity
  • Review balance sheet reconciliations while analyzing production variances, enact cycle count reports and analyze variances on a monthly basis and summarize at month-end close. Proactively monitor labor and materials issuing and coordinate frequent recurring meetings with Production and Procurement to ensure the correct cost is issued per individual project built. Conduct quarterly labor hours analysis to identify and clarify deviations
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement across the cost accounting function to improve key processes and KPI
  • Recommending changes to the company's manufacturing processes and policies to reduce cost and maximize profit
  • Partner with the IT to apply best practices in information systems
  • Support strategic initiatives, including global expansion, new manufacturing strategies and  assessments of new business opportunities
  • Leverage technology to build scalable and sustainable processes to create efficiencies, streamline accounting operations in an increasingly complex environment, improve the employee experience, and support the company's growth
  • Lead preparation for and management of our external audits for cost accounting, as well as other ad hoc audit activities
  • Recruit top talent and mentor team members, helping them reach their peak potential; foster a culture of continuous improvement complete with benchmarks for measuring successful performance

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration
  • Deep understanding of GAAP including inventory and cost accounting principles. CPA preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in cost finance modeling and/or cost accounting, including 5 years in a management capacity
  • 5+ years of experience in the semi-conductor, life science or other manufacturing industry
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment
  • Direct, hands-on experience with inventory tracking
  • Strong leadership skills and proactive problem-solving approach
  • Strategic thinking and leadership experience with an emphasis on relationship management and interacting with all levels within an organization as well as with external auditors
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing
  • Deep understanding of US GAAP requirements and a strong ability to interpret and apply GAAP to real-life issues at hand
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented self-starter; ability to work independently and collaborate to meet deadlines; effectively work with team to expedite completion of critical projects
  • Collaborative business partner, adept in building cross-functional relationships to drive results
  • Ability to inspire action and coordinate simultaneous initiatives
  • Ability to craft and deliver presentations to senior business executives
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to develop and mentor staff
  • Proven track record of delivering large-scale, cross-functional projects
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and Power Point
