Global Category Strategic Sourcing (GSS) Senior Manager - Contract Research and Animal Model Services


What you will do

Lets do this. Lets change the world. In this vital role you will be responsible for developing sourcing strategy, leading supplier selection and supplier relationship management for Contract Research Services and Animal Model Services categories (~$100M spend) supporting the R&D organization. The Senior Manager will be accountable to understand business strategy and then develop a comprehensive, long term, category strategy which will deliver maximum value to Amgen internal customers, shareholders and patients in this spend category.

As Global Category Senior Manager you will:

  • Serves as the category leader and market expert in this category for the company

  • Develops strong, mutually beneficial relationships with key internal partners to understand internal needs and strategies

  • Develops deep supplier relationships and expert understanding of the supply market

  • Collaboratively builds a multiyear strategy for the category that will delivery year over year efficiency

  • Leads the Supplier and Source selection process for the category

  • Provides leadership in establishing supplier segmentation and supports the SRM process

  • Provides subject matter advice to internal and external partner groups addressing current/future business needs, demonstrating marketplace knowledge

  • Acts as a trusted business advisor, providing thought leadership and consistent customer service

  • Leads the contracting process and strategy for the related supply base.

  • Leads and influences customer groups with sound and eloquent business recommendations (i.e. make vs. buy strategy) with quantifiable financial benefits

  • Ability to effectively communicate strategies, drive decisions and challenge partners

  • Champion of efficiency efforts within the category

  • Owns the category management process and the frame-work and set of practices used to optimally

  • Acts as an ambassador for the GSS function and be the key point of contact for the category, both within and outside of GSS

  • Effectively drives cross-category collaboration where overlapping partner groups, geographic regions and / or requirements exist

  • Manages, minimizes and mitigates supply/contractual/regulatory risk by demonstrating other key Amgen functions where appropriate

  • Develop and model multiple business cases to demonstrate the potential opportunities and impact of options across a category

Basic qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience


Masters degree and 4 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience


Bachelors degree and 6 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience


Associates degree and 10 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience


High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Sourcing plus any combination of Finance, Engineering/Computer Science, Management Consulting and Data Sciences experience

Preferred qualifications:

  • Solid understanding of procurement/sourcing/category management methodology and able to drive value for customers demonstrating fit-for-purpose sourcing levers

  • Excellent and disciplined project management and prioritization skills with ability to react to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently

  • Ability to conform to shifting priorities and have ability to drive multiple simultaneous projects

  • Technical knowledge and business ability related to Contract Manufacturing categories within the Biotech industry

  • Ability to use the Category Management process and ability to use relevant tools to develop strategic plans

  • Ability to develop baseline cost models to accurately represent current state and ability to build dynamic total cost of ownership models with multiple scenarios in order to evaluate and quantify value

  • Proficiency in MS Office tools (powerpoint and excel), analytical tools, ERP systems etc.

  • CPM qualification (US) or CIPS qualification (UK) is desirable

  • Strong eye for business in order to quickly understand functional/category dynamics and develop category strategies that drive value

  • Ability to deliver sophisticated multi-regional and/or global projects in a matrixed and global environment

  • Broad knowledge of the market forces crafting a customers business context (e.g. supplier base, legal & regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)

  • Ability to understand external market information, including ability to conduct benchmarking to address cost, quality, risk and innovation considerations

  • Ability to understand cost drivers, internal costs and future demand and re requirements

  • Ability to provide thought leadership, ability to influence and actively shape strategy

  • Strong financial savvy and problem-solving skills

  • Independent self-starter and able to empower others to accomplish ambiguous tasks

  • Clear thinker, disciplined, logical and organized with the ability to prioritize
