Specific Responsibilities:

Seeking a highly motivated, creative and collaborative individual with a strong motivation for and dedication to the discovery of new life-saving medicines. The candidate will join our internal efforts focused on the research and development of novel medicines for treatment and prevention of respiratory and emerging viruses. The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment to support the discovery, optimization, and preclinical development of novel antiviral drug candidates. Primary responsibilities will include leading in vitro and in vivo virology studies to characterize newly discovered molecules as well as designing and evaluating new targets and therapeutic approaches in a fast-paced team environment. The successful candidate would be expected to:
  • Independently plan, design, implement and analyze laboratory experiments and studies to support the discovery of antiviral drugs, the development of drug candidates, and/or the research in support of marketed products, and to advance scientific knowledge of drug target and relevant biological processes
  • Design and develop efficient and reliable assays and tools for profiling drug candidate molecules
  • Conduct in-depth characterization of mechanisms of antiviral activity and resistance profiles
  • Function as a lead and/or core member of one or more multidisciplinary drug discovery teams
  • Interact closely with other parts and functions of the Gilead R&D organization including medicinal and structural chemistry, high through-put screening, biologics engineering, drug metabolism and safety, as well as clinical development and regulatory affairs.
  • Identify and support external collaborations, oversee external studies with academic collaborators and contract research organizations
  • Participate in the assessment of external business development opportunities.
  • Regularly present results and updates at project team meetings, project and portfolio reviews, and other internal meetings
  • Build and continue expanding the understanding and knowledge of research and development in the area of respiratory and emerging/neglected viruses
  • Represent Gilead at scientific meetings and through high impact scientific communications

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant life science discipline (virology, infectious diseases, immunology, cellular or molecular biology)

Minimum of 4 years post-PhD experience focused on innovative research in virology with proven achievements in industrial settings, including peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Extensive understanding of and experience with principles and techniques in virology, molecular biology and cellular biology

Willingness to conduct experiments in BSL3 containment laboratory

Experience with independently designing, conducting, and analyzing critical experiments and studies. Strong ability to recognize and interpret patterns, trends and anomalies in datasets and results

Endorsement of teamwork and understanding of principles of cross-functional scientific collaboration

Strong professional motivation and desire to excel in a productive and fast-pace R&D organization with focus on clearly defined goals and objectives

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively within the Virology group and multidisciplinary groups within Research.
