The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NCBI is the world’s premier biomedical center hosting over six million daily users that seek research, clinical, genetic, and other information that directly impacts biomedical research and public health – at NCBI you can literally help to accelerate cures for diseases!

 

NCBI’s wide range of applications, platforms (node, python, Django, C++, you name it) and environments (big data [petabytes], machine learning, multiple clouds) serve more users than almost any other US Government Agency according to https://analytics.usa.gov/. The NCBI Taxonomy covers information on the names of nearly half a million species across all domains of life and plays an essential role in organizing information across resources at NCBI and its international partners. The Software Developer will work on solutions to support continued development of associated resources at NCBI.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Participate in development, implementation, testing, and continued maintenance of NCBI Taxonomy Information System.• Work with a diverse group of scientists, bioinformaticians and other developers to support and improve the Taxonomy project at NCBI.• Learn new technologies, keep up with the internal systems, and share knowledge with the team.

Requirements

 

Required qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Science
  • Proficiency in C++ and JavaScript
  • Experience working in a distributed computing environment
  • Programming experience in a Linux environment
  • Experience with relational databases, Microsoft SQL or similar
  • Experience with Linux shell scripts

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience using/developing web services, web-based, and network APIs
  • Experience with AWS or Google clouds
  • Experience with ExtJS/Sencha toolkits
  • Due to our contractual requirements and federal orders, including an Executive Order from the White House and an emergency regulation from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the position for which you are applying requires that you provide proof of your vaccination status.
