The Senior Director, Genomics and Health Data Mining, will be a member of the senior scientific leadership at the Regeneron Genetics Center (RGC) whose goals are the application of large-scale human genetics, genomics, and data science to identify new drug targets, guide the development of therapeutics programs, and develop predictors and classifiers of disease risk, progression, and response to interventions.

The post holder will have key responsibilities in mining large human genetics datasets including 100,000s of genotyped and sequenced participants, in partnership with other RGC teams, to translate genetic findings into new therapeutic insights across therapeutic areas.

The key focus of the post will be to develop a research program with the following goals: (a) to empower the translation of genetic association findings into new therapeutic targets, indications and precision medicine approaches that will enable Regeneron to deliver better medicines to the patients who need them; (b) to support existing pre-clinical and clinical development programs within Regeneron across Therapeutic Areas using human genetics approaches; (c) to form strong partnerships with the Analytical Genomics, Clinical Informatics, other RGC’s teams to accomplish the goals of the Therapeutic Area Genetics team, RGC and Regeneron at large.


Responsibilities

• Develop a cutting-edge human genetics program centered around mining of large, cross-therapeutic area genomic and health phenotype datasets to help identify and validate therapeutic targets.

• Develop and champion a portfolio of large and complex human genetic and epidemiological studies, working with scientific leaders, analytical and translational genetics functions and, more broadly, teams across scientific and business functions at the RGC and beyond.

• Collaborate with analytical teams at the RGC, including high-throughput genetic analysis, methods development and applied statistical genetics functions to develop and deploy cutting-edge analytics and data mining approaches for (a) the identification of target genes in large multidimensional datasets including genomic and health trait information on 100,000s participants and (b) the rapid and standardized surveying of phenotypic associations for genotypes of interest in target genes.

• Collaborate with the data engineering teams at the RGC to help make high-throughput data analysis insights broadly available to the RGC research community using institutional browsers and resources.

• Collaborate with Clinical Informatics to develop innovative phenotype combinations and clustering approaches that are conductive to advanced genetic discovery and data mining.

• Develop strong collaborations with all Therapeutic Area Genetics teams and their analytical partner teams to build the evidence package around potential or existing target genes to maximize biological and medical insight.

• Be a scientific champion for the interaction with health system, academic and industry collaborators in strategic initiatives at the RGC.

• Embrace, foster and embody a collegial, collaborative and inclusive working culture. Collaborate in equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives at the RGC and in research programs aimed to increase diversity in genomic research.

• Mentor and line-manage junior colleagues and work to attract the best talent to build the basis for the sustained success of the team and RGC at large.

• Present scientific results in internal and external meetings to a variety of audiences including Regeneron’s senior management. Participate in, contribute to and lead the writing of scientific reports, study protocols, publications, regulatory submissions or intellectual property applications.

Requirements

• PhD with outstanding training and experience in translational human genetics, genetic epidemiology (or related disciplines) and strong quantitative, scientific and leadership skills.

• Demonstrated ability to develop and lead a portfolio of human genetics research aimed at identifying new drug targets or delivering other medically-relevant findings. Ability to formulate innovative and important research questions and to design and lead studies that will address them.

• Experience leading cutting-edge human genetics research endeavors including multiple cohorts and hundreds of thousands of participants. Knowledge of different study designs and analyses including GWAS, exome or genome sequencing in cohort, case-control or family-based studies. Ability to integrate different data resources to translate initial findings. An outstanding candidate will have previous experience in the pharmaceutical industry or world-leading research in academic institutions.

• Familiarity with the applications of statistical genetics to gain medically-actionable insights (eg. use of polygenic risk scores, integration of functional experiments and genetic association results, Mendelian randomization) and different etiologic models of disease.

• Previous experience and outstanding scientific achievement in translational human genetics.

 
• Ability to work in a highly interactive environment with a diverse team of colleagues, to mentor and direct junior colleagues and to serve as team leader or team player in cross-functional teams.

• Outstanding communication skills and an ability to summarize and present the results of human genetic studies to a variety of audiences.
