Worldwide Research, Development, and Medical (WRDM) is recruiting a leader in clinical uses of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and predictive modeling.

The successful candidate will recruit a team of experts in biomarker analysis, computational analysts, data scientists and/or statistics to bring AI/ML techniques to bear on clinical assets and precision medicine strategies.

The clinical AI/ML team will partner with multiple clinical, computational and biological functions to build datasets and implement predictive algorithms to bring information for and endpoint selection, individualized dosing strategies and/or patient stratification to clinical teams based on non-invasive biomarkers. The successful candidate will work within Pfizer and across the industry to bring the latest solutions and technology to drive precision medicine strategies.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Ensure appropriate approaches are applied from data collection through model building and deployment to ensure robust performance and applicability of all predictive algorithms. Define strategy for harnessing cutting edge AI methods to enhance our clinical development efforts, sustain our industry leading R&D productivity, and deliver breakthrough medicines to the patients most in need

  • Chart a path to realize our aspirations to become the most respected machine learning research group within the bio-pharmaceutical R&D industry

  • Provide a compelling vision for the organization that drives the business strategy, impact and return on investment for AI forward

  • Recruit, manage and develop a team of ~5 PhD-level or experienced scientists in the AI field

  • Identify therapies/assets most likely to lead to successful personalized medicine strategies for noninvasive biomarkers.

  • Collaborate across multiple teams and functions to assess likely biomarker technologies for gaining insight into predictors of response.

  • Collaborate with internal and external groups to build datasets to evaluate potential biomarkers for model building.

  • Prototype, train, validate and deploy novel AI/ML models for patient selection strategies for clinical assets in collaboration with Pfizer Digital and multiple functions across WRDM.

  • Increase Pfizer’s externally facing ML presence within the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Ensure Pfizer methodology remains current through evaluation of external vendors and tools.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in statistics, computer science, applied mathematics, scientific machine learning, computational genomics or related discipline with10 + years of relevant experience

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to build, develop and lead teams in a large matrixed organization and manage relationships and deliverables across multiple stakeholders

  • Experience and familiarity with high-dimensional datasets and analyses, preferably with clinical, biomarker, real-world data and/or PK/PD data sets; familiarity with other model-informed drug development approaches (e.g. PK/PD, QSP, NLME)

  • Demonstrated success in predictive modeling, machine learning, and/or AI approaches in biological settings; familiarity with sciML is a plus

  • Expertise with multiple programming languages including R, Python, Perl, Java, julia, etc.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with senior leaders to build momentum to a shared vision

  • Experience with HPC and cloud computing environments

  • Demonstrated ability to publish applications of AI/ML in peer-reviewed journals and/or present AI/ML applications at national or international conferences
