ROLE SUMMARY

The primary purpose of this position is to assist in and execute microbial fermentation experiments required for the production of various vaccine candidates. This position offers a challenging and exciting opportunity for implementing and learning different fermentation techniques and analytical skills and to solve complex biological problems. The ideal candidate is a highly talented and self-motivated individual with a strong scientific background and some laboratory research and facility operation experience.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assemble and operate Sterilize-In-Place (SIP) and benchtop fermenters (up to 400L scale) for microbial fermentation.
  • Manage microbial cell bank.
  • Manage/maintain operation and safety for microbial fermentation facility.
  • Execute experiments per instruction to optimize and enhance antigen production using microbial platform
  • Learn and perform high throughput bioreactor systems (e.g. Biolector Pro and Ambr250, etc) and analytical instrument (e.g. NOVA analytical instrument, Cedex Bio HT Analyzer, HPLC, SDS-PAGE and Plasmid isolation/quantification instrument, etc) for bioprocess improvement and optimization
  • Analyze, interpret, and provide conclusions and present experimental data with minimal supervision
  • Maintain detailed records and keep management informed as to the progress or issues.
  • Where applicable, perform job responsibilities in compliance with GLP and all other regulatory agency requirements
  • Satisfactorily complete all GLP and safety training in compliance with departmental requirements and follow appropriate safety practices in the workplace
  • Perform timely notebook entries and review for completed experiments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience and/or coursework/laboratory experience in Microbiology
  • Knowledge of biology fundamentals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

NICE TO HAVE

  • Facility Operation/Laboratory research experience.
  • SIP fermenters operation/maintenance experience
  • Experience with commercial fermentation control software
  • Proficiency with large dataset analysis software or programming

  
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Need to be able to lift 50 pounds of object for material transfer.

Mental requirements are a detailed understanding of the scientific subject matter and an ability to make scientific judgments and perform data analysis.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

The work requires a flexible work schedule to run fermentation process and other job duties. This may involve the necessity of working outside of core hours and on weekends.
