Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Drug Discovery, the Head, Medicinal Chemistry will contribute to and influence all aspects of the drug discovery process from target discovery through nomination of clinical candidates.  As a senior member of the Research and Development team, you will foster a culture of scientific excellence, rigorous innovation, collaboration, and fun! Key Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will bring significant chemistry research expertise, hands on chemical design and problem-solving expertise and track-record of leading novel discovery programs from inception to clinic. Specific experience in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration disease areas discovering CNS-penetrant compounds is desirable. This individual will be responsible for growing and leading a highly productive internal and external chemistry team focused on discovering new molecular entities and advancing these drug candidates to clinical development. 

  • Grow, maintain, and lead a chemistry team leveraging both internal and external resources while fostering a culture of scientific excellence, innovation, productivity, and teamwork
  • Lead high-impact research across multi-disciplinary drug discovery programs to advance small molecule programs from HTS through development candidate nomination
  • Provide scientific and managerial leadership, vision, execution, and communication of both strategic and tactical objectives to the chemistry team through objective setting, performance management, problem solving, individual development while demonstrating a strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration
  • Establish and clearly communicate priorities and timelines against corporate goals
  • Manage and deploy resources effectively to achieve desired goals.
  • Develop strong relationships and communicate effectively within Nura Bio and with key external stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively with scientific and management colleagues to ensure successful achievement of R&D goals
  • Present key findings at scientific meetings, Board of Directors, and other external stakeholders and forums

Professional Experience/ Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or D.Phil. in synthetic or medicinal chemistry, with 15+ years of hands-on experience in small molecule drug discovery
  • Dynamic, highly motivated self-starter with strong executive presence, work ethic, exceptional interpersonal skills, focus and drive to succeed
  • Deep understanding in the design of biologically active small molecules, including SBDD and the use of common modeling tools with a keen interest in deploying cutting-edge techniques to identify best-in-class therapeutics
  • Demonstrated project leadership experience within cross-functional teams with an ability to focus on and prioritize time-sensitive objectives for multiple programs simultaneously
  • Significant prior experience with supervision and development of talented scientists as project leaders to independently drive the development of SAR, lead optimization, and profiling of small molecule therapeutics
  • Deep understanding of latest scientific advances in small molecule drug discovery, SAR and the design of new molecular entities to a broad variety of protein targets.
  • Solutions and results oriented, driven to achieve ambitious goals.
  • Experience in evaluating, establishing, and managing successful scientific collaborations with academic thought leaders and industry partners.
  • Ability to interact effectively with cross-disciplinary scientific teams, management, founders, board members, corporate partners, and investors.
  • Significant prior experience working with CROs and efficiently managing synthetic chemistry and ADME profiling efforts
  • Broad working knowledge of related scientific disciplines including analytical chemistry, pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, and toxicology
  • A strong scientific publication record evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, patents, and presentations at scientific conferences
