About the role

Sana Biotechnology is growing, and we are hiring new team members who believe in the potential of engineered cells as medicines, who want to challenge status quo, and who lead with the desire to work on novel ideas.  As a Senior Research Associate, you will report to Principal Scientist. You will be part of Sana’s Genomics Core and will contribute to the implementation of robust and reproducible NGS-based assays across the company.  You will conduct a variety of complex Next Generation Sequencing experimental procedures within the overall scope of research projects conducted at Sana’s Genomics Core.  You will be operating highly technical laboratory instruments and equipment such as Illumina MiSeq and NextSeq sequencers as well as various liquid handlers for automation. You will work directly with Director of the Core in the administration and coordination of the technical activities of the core and in the managing and maintenance of Core’s instrumentation.

What you’ll do

  • Implement NGS-based methods with appropriate experimental controls under manager supervision. This includes any troubleshooting of sequencing runs that may arise.
  • Work independently to execute on NGS protocols, standard molecular biology and biochemistry techniques
  • Prepare NGS libraries and operate NGS sequencers (Illumina) on a regular basis
  • Help develop QC metrics for assays to reduce time and costs associated with sequencing
  • Write up experimental results in an electronic lab notebook, maintain good lab notebook procedures, and ensure data and reports are properly recorded
  • Collaborate with the automation team to test and validate liquid handler assisted workflows
  • Collaborate with Computational Biology team for the analysis of NGS data
  • Help in the operation and maintenance of the Genomics Core lab and equipment
  • Help director develop and implement laboratory policies and procedures. Manage and coordinate operational policies and procedures
  • Maintain liaison with users of Genomics Core and research personnel to solve problems and improve technical activities. Advise on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards. Represent the laboratory in correspondence with users
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, genetics, or related field plus 4 years, or master’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience in the life sciences or biopharma industry
  • Strong candidates with less experience may be considered at a Research Associate level
  • Minimum of 2 years of in-depth hands-on laboratory experience with molecular biology techniques (PCR, nucleic acid extraction and quantification)
  • Prior experience designing and documenting experiments
  • Outstanding attention to detail and ability to assess technical protocols
  • Demonstrated success working and collaborating in a team setting
  • Ability to handle several fast-paced projects concurrently
  • Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, flexible, and able to prioritize and manage several fast-paced projects concurrently
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • The candidate should be collaborative, a team player and demonstrate curiosity
  • Ability to engage in crucial conversations – providing and receiving feedback

What will separate you from the crowd

  • 2 years of hands-on experience with NGS library prep and Illumina sequencer operation
  • Experience utilizing liquid/handling robots and plate readers

What you should know

  • This position will require to regularly stand, sit, transition from standing to sitting, walk, bend, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing around 20 pounds
  • Perform repetitive tasks, such as pipetting of reagents is an integral part of this job
  • Working safely in person on a predictable and regular in-person basis is an essential job function for this position, and the Company requires that all individuals working in-person be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including receipt of a vaccine booster shot if recommended by the CDC
