Job Details

Associate Director, Computational Biology - Statistical Geneticist - San Diego

We’re a different kind of biotech company.  And we’re here to make a difference.

Prometheus Biosciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: RXDX), is a clinical-stage biotechnology company pioneering a precision medicine approach for the discovery, development, and commercialization of novel therapeutic and companion diagnostic products for the treatment of immune-mediated diseases.  The Company’s precision medicine platform, Prometheus360™, combines proprietary machine learning-based analytical approaches with one of the world’s largest gastrointestinal bioinformatics databases to identify novel therapeutic targets and develop therapeutic candidates to engage those targets. Prometheus Biosciences is headquartered in San Diego, CA.

The Company’s lead candidate, PRA023, is an IgG1 humanized monoclonal antibody (mAb) for the treatment of immune-mediated diseases including Ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn’s disease (CD), and the newly identified systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD).  The Company is currently conducting a Phase 2 trial in UC patients and a Phase 2a trial in CD patients, each utilizing a proprietary genetic-based companion diagnostic designed to identify patients who are predisposed to increased expression of TL1A and therefore potentially more likely to respond to PRA023.  The company also plans to initiate a Phase 2 clinical trial for PRA023 in SSc-ILD in the first quarter of 2022.

Summary

We are looking for a Statistical Geneticist to contribute to the analysis and interpretation of genotyped patients with the goal of generating the knowledge and enabling development of better medicines to unmet need patients.  The role will involve collaborative partnership with internal and external experts in genomic data analysis, data science, computational biology, and medicine to design, implement and refine genetic epidemiological analyses that improve our understanding of the etiology of human diseases and health.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct genome scale analyses with genotype or sequence data.
  • Use and interpret Mendelian randomization studies, polygenic risk score analysis, and pleiotropy analysis, with sequencing or genotyping data as a substrate.
  • Conduct groundbreaking genomic analyses and use their application to complex human traits.
  • Use innovative genetic epidemiological analysis methods to generate insights about human disease.  Approaches to be employed include Mendelian randomization, polygenic risk score modelling, LD Score regression, pleiotropy analysis, and meta-analysis.
  • Critically review and provide input on analysis plans, results and summaries to ensure they are accurate and reliable.  Identify potential problems and propose remedies or refinements.

Experience and Qualifications

  • PhD in Statistical Genetics, Computational Biology/Bioinformatics, Bioengineering, Computer Science or a related field with 3 or more years of experience in industry.
  • Knowledge of human genetic association analyses and approaches, understanding of epidemiological study design, approaches for assessing shared genetic risks across phenotypes, and the use of genetic information in assessing disease risk and causal relationships.
  • Understanding of strategies and methods for genotype imputation, haplotyping, relationship inference and/or polygenic risk score estimation.  Experience with multiple tools for large scale genetic analyses (e.g., PLINK, EPACTS, SAIGE, minimac, METAL/RAREMETAL).
  • Experience conducting genetic epidemiologic analyses of one of the following phenotype areas: IBD, quantitative traits, scleroderma, or drug response, preferred.
  • Proficiency with Unix-based systems, source version control (e.g., Git) and cloud computing environments and tools (e.g., AWS, Azure, docker).

Skills and Abilities

  • Highly collaborative working style and ability to adapt in a fast paced, rapidly developing environment with a diverse team of colleagues.
  • Ability to work with general direction to meet objectives and timelines, adapting to changes and priorities.
  • Bring innovative thinking to large-scale genetic studies and analysis.
  • Have a strong work ethic and are proactive in providing solutions to foster scientific collaborations and drive projects forward.
  • Have outstanding communication skills to summarize and present new statistical methods and concepts and the results of human genetic studies to a variety of technical audiences, ranging from specialists in statistical genetics and computation to specialists in biology, drug design and medicine.
  • Are a motivated teammate with a desire to pursue genetic discovery in a multi-disciplinary environment.
