We are currently searching for a Mass Spectrometrist to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and perform various mass spectrometry experiments, as well as develop novel methods and assays for high-throughput analysis and MS-based compound screening. They will work independently as a well-trained problem solver in the areas of MS and HPLC. They will manage, troubleshoot, and regularly maintain the instrumentation. They will be expected to prepare samples of various modalities prior to analysis, training staff regarding methods and procedures, and aiding in data analysis. The contractor will also be required to keep accurate and complete records of all scientific experiments according to established procedures and ensure that these records and raw data are properly retained. This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Rockville, MD.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform mass spectrometry MS experimentation for a wide range of samples utilizing a variety of instrumentation including Orbitrap Fusion Lumos, Rapid Fire-QQQ, qTOF, and TOF; Perform MS spectral data analysis and interpretation utilizing vendor and third-party software
  • Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments
  • Utilize in-house laboratory information management system LIMS and electronic laboratory notebook ELN software; enter and review data
  • perform work related to the development and implementation of MS-based methods, protocols, and platforms focused on lipid analysis and lipidomic

  • Develop novel methods and assays for advanced HRMS analysis, high-throughput MS-based sample screening, post-translational modification PTM analysis, multiple reaction monitoring MRM, and ultra-high-resolution analysis of small molecules
  • Prepare samples of various modalities prior to analysis, including but not limited to small molecules, lipids, peptides, and proteins; Utilize Agilent Bravo and other liquid handling equipment
  • Maintain computer database for various records
  • Develop and implement MS-based methods, protocols, and platforms focused on lipid analysis and lipidomic; provide training for instrument operation and data analysis with lipid samples
  • Maintain and provide updates on mass spectrometry consumables and parts, as well as equipment maintenance
  • Maintain and perform light training on scientific instrumentation, including, but not limited to, HPLCUPLC instruments, analytical balances, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and vacuum apparatus
  • Troubleshoot complex procedural- and equipment-related problems and provide innovative solutions when necessary
  • Monitor and report on all safety issues
  • Perform general troubleshooting, maintenance, and upkeep on the MS, HPLC, and UPLC instrumentation

Requirements Skills
  • Expertise with mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), advanced knowledge of analytical chemistry, and a basic understanding of organic chemistry
  • Experience working in a laboratory that carries out chemical research and experience with safety issues associated with chemistry laboratories
  • Knowledge of principles and operating procedures of general laboratory equipment
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills

  • Master’s-Ph.D. degree required: five (5) years of specialized experience plus a Master’s degree is equivalent to a Ph.D. degree; Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or related discipline preferred.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience dependent upon degree/education
