Job Details

The Regeneron Genetics Center’s Genome Informatics & Data Engineering R&D team is looking for a Data Analytics Engineer/Data Scientist to work at the interface of genomics, big data engineering, and ML/advanced analytics. The candidate will work on a team of engineers focused on designing modern, scalable, and production-quality analytical methods that integrate genomic and health data from millions of individuals. The candidate will work heavily within our Databricks/Apache Spark ecosystem on AWS, expanding the analytical tools and infrastructure designed to use our genomic and health data lake. The ideal candidate will have a passion for designing high performance methods that use modern data science, engineering, and compute architectures, with the goal of bringing the state-of-the-art in data science & engineering to the human genomic data domain. As part of the R&D team, this individual will have the opportunity to contribute innovative methods, pipelines, and infrastructure to both our internal systems as well as our open-source initiatives (eg. Project Glow), where our tools contribute to Regeneron’s drug development pipelines and push the state-of-the-art in large scale analytics for genomic health.

In this role, a typical day might include the following:

  • Apply modern data mining and machine learning methodologies to our internal genetic and phenotypic data lake, maximizing distributed computing technologies to uncover insights to improve drug development efforts
  • Engineer and productionize analytic/ML methods and pipelines capable of processing terabytes of genomic and clinical data
  • Perform applied research, working on projects within and across scientific teams
  • Contribute enhancements to internal data “browser” applications that enable Regeneron scientists to mine terabytes of RGC data for insights
  • Interact and collaborate with other technical teams, including data engineers, data architects, application developers, and dev ops engineers
  • Contribute to open-source initiatives including Project Glow (https://projectglow.io/)
  • Keep abreast of state-of-the-art software engineering and data science technologies
This job might be for you if:
  • You have a passion to work with data in the health & life sciences domain.
  • With your sleeves rolled up, you work on current problems while thinking of future solutions.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills with expertise in documentation and visual presentations.
  • You enjoy collaborating with multiple cross-functional teams of scientists, analysts, and engineers.

To be considered for this role you must have a PhD or M.S. or B.S. with 5+ years of relevant experience in computer science, data mining, bioinformatics, data science, software engineering, or machine learning. Experience in developing scalable, high-performance analytics software, with a deep understanding of algorithm design principles and data processing pipelines. Knowledge of distributed and high-performance compute technologies, such as Spark, MPI, Dask, or other parallel computing frameworks. Domain knowledge in genomics, bioinformatics, or statistical genetics preferred, but not required. 3+ years of software engineering experience in a modern Object Oriented or Functional language. Knowledge of modern data infrastructure technologies, such as data lake/lakehouse, data warehousing, relational DB/SQL, NoSQL, etc. Experience with cloud computing (AWS preferred). Demonstrated experience in engineering scalable and performant data processing software in Spark or another distributed compute environment is a plus.
