Job Details

Leads and participates in the design and conduct of experiments to develop protein polymer conjugation procedures for generation of potential biologic therapeutics.  Performs analytical characterization appropriate to molecular characteristics. Possesses knowledge of relevant biochemical techniques, including protein engineering, protein purification, protein conjugation or derivatization. Participates in technology development in the area of protein polymer conjugation and analytical development. Interprets, communicates experimental findings and documents according to approved Nektar policy. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and develops and analyzes new product concepts by reviewing preclinical and clinical literature. Assists in technology transfer of protein conjugation procedures to process development/manufacturing group or external CMO. This position contributes to and supports the company’s research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs.

Responsibilities:

Will be responsible for preparing and purifying protein PEG conjugates, writing reports and maintaining detailed laboratory documentation. Works on problems of diverse scope in which analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.  Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.  Normally receives no instructions on routine work, general instructions on new assignments. 

  • Responsible for hands on PEGylation and purification of proteins and peptides, development/execution of purification schemes for PEG-protein conjugates, and development/execution of analytical methods for PEG-protein conjugate analysis.
  • Contributes to scale-up process development as needed. Writes technical reports, participates in the development of patent applications.  Oral presentations will be periodically required. 
  • Synthesizes multiple data sources and draws general, non-obvious conclusions.  Defines problems, develops approaches and develops experiments with sound judgment with minimal supervision.
  • Uses professional concepts and scientific knowledge to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.
  • Interfaces with various departments, customers and partners.  Puts work practices in context with larger team and company goals. Coordinate activities with other team members.
  • May assist with implementing organizational systems, identifying capital equipment, and projecting near-term resource requirements.

Requirements:

A PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related field is required. Equivalent experience may be accepted.  A minimum of 2 years work experience in research or development within the biotechnology industry is required. Industry biotech post-doctoral work may serve as experience. Exceptional non-PhDs with demonstrated capabilities and/or significant industry experience may also be considered. Must be able to demonstrate success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.  Must have current hands-on laboratory skills and be able to demonstrate expert knowledge in scientific principles and concepts. Must have excellent protein purification and characterization skills. Familiarity with IEX, RP, and SEC and standard laboratory techniques is expected. Experience with generation and purification of PEGylated proteins is highly desirable. Experience with structural biology is a plus. Must possess good oral & written communication skills. Must be able to demonstrate sound judgment. Must be able to demonstrate problem-solving capabilities. Strong organizational skills are required. Good computer skills are required. Working knowledge of MS word, Excel, Power point is expected. Experience working in an FDA regulated environment and knowledge of current GMPs as they apply to laboratory practices is a plus. Must be willing to work as part of a team. Must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
