Grail is seeking a Manager, Environmental Health & Safety to develop, implement, and sustain EHS improvement programs focused on preventing occupational injuries and illnesses, environmental impacts, and operational hazards and risks for our Menlo Park operations. This role will be responsible for delivering training, identifying, evaluating, and eliminating hazards, ensuring compliance with government regulations, and achieving world class standard for EHS within the biotechnology industry. 

This role is within the Facilities organization reporting to the Director of Facilities, and will represent the site in EHS matters to regulatory agencies, inspectors, partners, and project teams, working closely with other site functions, consultants, and contractors as required.  Leadership in this role includes effective participation in site Emergency Response planning, preparation, and execution activities, direction of the site EHS Committee, and tracking & reporting of key metrics to drive compliance, sustainability and continuous improvement initiatives at the site.
You Will:
  • Provide regular performance feedback, development and coaching to direct reports. Ensure site EHS compliance through management of the site Compliance Calendar including assuring permit renewals and reporting occur as required.
  • Promote a culture of safety in site operations and engaging the workforce to drive continuous improvement in EHS programs.
  • Plan & coordinate of emergency drills and response team preparation activities.
  • Manage the site regulated waste management program including third party contracts and record keeping.
  • Manage the site Chemical Inventory to local storage and handling requirements.
  • Develop and conduct EHS training for employees and contractors, including orientation for new hires. Manage the site EHS Compliance Inspection program, ensuring adequate processes are in place to capture, track, communicate and resolve compliance issues.
  • Manage the site EHS Committee including membership and agenda development.
  • Ensure adequate processes are in place to capture, track, communicate and resolve employee concerns.
  • Provide oversight of Contractor Management program to ensure compliance during maintenance and project activities is enforced, including orientation for new service providers.
  • Perform New Product, New Process, New Equipment reviews to ensure they meet site EHS requirements.
  • Perform Risk and Job Hazard Assessments as needed in office and laboratory environments to address employee exposure, ergonomics and other compliance concerns Engage with vendors/contractors for EHS services as needed to initiate, develop and/or renew contracts and service obligations.
  • Engage with site project teams to influence EHS compliance at design phaseDevelop and tracking of EHS Performance metrics for communication and facilitation of continuous improvement and sustainability initiatives.
  • Develop EHS Communication tools for site awareness and access to information.

Your Background Should Include:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. 
  • Concentration in EHS or related Engineering field highly preferred. 
  • Minimum 5-10 years in an EHS support or leadership role required.
  • Strong working knowledge of EHS regulatory requirements for lab operations.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated application in incident investigation.
  • Ability to assess various emergency scenarios and evaluate suitable protective actions.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills working with Microsoft/Google office applications.
  • Ability to function efficiently and independently in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Ability to lead projects with attention to detail and prioritization.
  • Ability to effectively lead without authority.  

Desired Attributes:
  • ASP/CSP/CAIH/CIH or similar certification
  • Current DOT/RCRA Hazardous Waste training
  • HazWOPER 40hr/Supervisor training
  • ISO14001/45001 Auditor training

Experience:
  • Minimum 5-10 years of work experience in related EHS capacity, including management of Compliance Inspections and Hazardous Waste.  The ideal candidate will also have experience in:
