Element Biosciences is a multi-disciplinary startup focused on innovating genetic analysis tools for the research and clinical markets. The Company's technology will broaden the end user experience through improved data quality and simplified workflows to benefit discoveries and diagnosis in healthcare.

We are looking for a creative, enthusiastic, and highly motivated synthetic chemist to join the chemistry & Chemistry Discovery group at a well-funded and long-term multi-venture backed Life Sciences start-up company. The chemist will be involved in the development of reagents for our new NGS technologies. Expect to be part of a highly energetic and collaborative team. The position is at research associate/associate scientist level and is located at San Diego, CA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform organic synthesis, purification of reaction crude product(s), identification of product structure.
  • Hands-on or Familiar with analytical instruments: UV/Vis, NanoDrop, Fluorometer, TLC, HPLC, and other types of chromatography.
  • Conjugation and purification of small molecules, protein, oligonucleotide, and other biomolecules.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and reagents stocks.
  • Maintain good documentation practices including organization of data and completion of batch records.
  • Interact closely with cross-functional departments to support chemistry needs prior to and through commercialization of technology
  • Present research summaries
  • Other duties as assigned

 

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or equivalent field of study, with 1+ years of relevant experience (an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered)
  • Capability to perform under supervision: organic synthesis, monitoring reaction progress, purification of the products using a variety of chromatography methods including flash column chromatography, preparative HPLC, ion exchange chromatography, and GPC/SEC column chromatography.
  • Willingness to learn and grow in a fast-paced and intellectually rewarding environment
  • Well organized and good communicator.
  • Good team player.
  • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Persistent and ambitious.
  • Multi-tasking; flexible working in a fast-paced research environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
