The Department of Oncology Research at Amgen, Thousand Oaks seeks an exceptional and motivated cancer biologist to lead collaborative teams focused on the discovery and development of novel targeted small molecule oncology therapeutics. The candidate will be part of a highly collaborative cross functional drug discovery team encompassing cancer biology, functional genomics, medicinal chemistry and structural biology.

In this vital role the senior scientist will manage a small research group, lead and support project teams from target nomination, lead candidate discovery through to phase 1 studies. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to initiate novel programs, contribute to therapeutic area strategy and establishment of new discovery platforms, and maintain an external scientific presence.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Taking a leading role in new target identification and validation using genomic approaches such as CRISPR to assess gene function.
  • Participation in the analysis of large-scale genomic, and phenotypic datasets e.g. DepMap
  • Taking a lead role in cross-functional teams evaluating the pharmacodynamic activity, efficacy and mechanism of action of therapeutic candidates in preclinical oncology models.
  • Close collaboration with our biomarker scientists to develop and implement pharmacodynamic assays and patient stratification strategies for programs transitioning to clinical development.
  • Partner with colleagues in the oncology therapeutic area, bioinformatics and medicinal chemistry to develop our strategy and new technologies to enable the successful execution of our drug discovery goals
  • Represent project teams through presentations at internal and external forums and the submission of manuscripts for publication.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree and 2 years of cancer biology or a related field

Or

Masters degree and 5 years of cancer biology or a related field

Or

Bachelors degree and 7 years of cancer biology or a related field

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD and post-doctoral training in cancer biology or a closely related field, preferable with a minimum of 3-5 years postdoctoral experience in an academic or industry setting.
  • Broad knowledge of cancer biology, with demonstrate evidence of scientific independence and leadership through senior author publications in top-tier journals.
  • Direct experience in new target identification and validation
  • Research experience with state of the art molecular and cell biology techniques, particularly those relevant for assaying gene function (e.g. CRISPR or shRNA
  • Experience leading drug discovery programs, and a proven ability to work effectively in a cross functional environment would be a plus.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Desire to be a team player in a dynamic, cross-functional environment
