Purpose:

This position is a Senior level Packaging Engineer with experience in sterile ophthalmics, sterile injectables (small and large molecule), and combination products. Under limited supervision, this position will support the Global Packaging department by providing technical packaging and drug delivery system expertise to ensure successful commercialization of new products.  This position will provide routine packaging development assistance to internal and third-party manufacturing sites including troubleshooting, new technology introduction, technical transfers, and packaging optimization. A Senior Packaging Engineer has general knowledge of other related disciplines beyond their own area of expertise.     

This role may be based outside of Illinois.                 

Responsibilities:

Design and implementation of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components and/or drug delivery systems for a variety of pharmaceutical product types, specifically sterile liquid ophthalmic and combination products. Experience with medical device packaging and regulations is preferred.

  • Act as technical project lead on cross functional teams to support tech transfer from R&D to Commercialization as well as technical transfers between packaging sites or packaging lines.
  • Manage changes to packaging materials of all types, including the evaluation of product, regulatory, and quality impact. Identify and perform appropriate lab testing and line trials to support changes.
  • Support packaging sites, internal and external, with process improvement and cost savings opportunities.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Independently plants and conducts small- to medium-size assigned projects with engineering specialty requiring conventional types of plans, investigations and/or equipment. Manages multiple, often concurrent, projects and meets deadlines. Responsible for achieving the project’s financial targets in support of business objectives. Maintains project controls and reporting for cost, scope and schedule; develops execution strategies. Balances multiple demands.
  • Produces unique and cost-effective results. Establishes alternate use possibilities and incorporates flexibility; balances system costs with benefits provided; oversees design work of internal and external consultants. Creates/Modifies designs for intermediate problems. Analyzes complex interdisciplinary problems and identifies their impact; establishes probabilities, draws conclusions reflecting broad business needs.
  • Responsibilities of this engineering grade level inherently include and expand upon the responsibilities established for lower engineering grade levels.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Packaging Engineering, Engineering, science or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with a desired 5+ years of significant packaging engineering and/or operational experience.
  • Desired experience with sterile ophthalmics within the Eye Care industry of 5+ years, with experience with combination products and design controls.
  • Has demonstrated competency within a discipline.
  • Possesses a strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures. Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data involve multiple competing factors. Demonstrates judgement within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.  
  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
  • Listens to and understands others points of view and articulates tactfully and respectively across all functions  one’s own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.
  • Works will with others in a collaborative, fast-paced and goal driven environment.
  • Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences; good time management to handle multiple projects at a single time and understand how to prioritize.
  • Demonstrated ability to progress with the packaging project from inception to commercialization
  • Has technical background in health care, medical devices, pharmaceutical, biologics, or similar industries (preferred, with emphasis on sterile ophthalmics). Knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), packaging regulations and trends in pharmaceutical, medical, and combination products
