LAB MANAGER

We are seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual for the position of Research Lab Manager in the Ionis Research Organization.

This position requires high attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously, as well as the ability to think strategically and execute methodically.  The successful candidate will be a member of a fast-paced and interactive research team and play a critical leadership role in the execution and success of laboratory operations.

The lab manager is a self-starting operational leader who will ensure a well-stocked and functional laboratory. The manager will provide general lab familiarization and training to new personnel and enforce proper laboratory safety guidelines. Their responsibilities will include maintaining supplies of general lab consumables, coordinating repairs and calibrations of laboratory equipment, and working with scientists to identify methods to meet growing demands. This independent lab manager will be comfortable working in a team environment and is expected to have strong written and oral communication skills

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the main point of contact to oversee, manage, and ensure effective overall day-to-day operations for a rapidly growing biotech company to assure a pleasant and positive working environment for employees working in the labs
  • Set and maintaining procedures to ensure a smooth-running lab environment and with high standards of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
  • Solve problems and manage issues that arise to minimize down time 
  • Monitor and manage alarm and warning systems on laboratory equipment
  • Resolve lab-related technical issues to ensure optimal performance and maintenance of all laboratory instrumentation, coordinate, schedule, and perform regular maintenance and basic repairs for laboratory equipment as needed, including maintaining equipment management system and supervision of contracted equipment technician personnel
  • Document repairs, adjustments, and replacement of equipment, identify old equipment and the impact if the equipment breaks so a priority list can be created to replace aging equipment
  • Make decisions on the cost of the service contract compared to the age and reliability of the equipment and interact with vendors and purchasing to establish annual service contracts
  • Oversee inventory management, including regular meetings with key vendors and direct management of supply center associates and stocking of appropriate supply levels for commonly used kits, reagents and general lab supplies, identify opportunities to improve efficiencies and management of large supply orders, combine inventory across labs to maximize efficiency
  • Organize vendor shows, manage annual or bi-annual lab cleanup days
  • Liaison with Facilities, Purchasing and HSE to maintain efficient function of labs and sit on the safety/biosafety committee
  • Budgeting, tracking, and reporting financial metrics
  • Monitor lab supply spending and track against budget to identify discrepancies, develop and manage budgets for service contracts, lab supplies and other lab related expenses
  • Manage Capital budget, including review, purchase, installation, and personnel training of new lab equipment

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A life science degree with 5+ years of lab experience
  • Prior Laboratory Management experience preferred
  • Experience with a wide variety of scientific instrumentation
  • Experience working with mammalian cell culture
  • Experience training/teaching new employees specific relevant technical and conceptual skills
  • Familiarity with EHS regulatory requirements
  • Familiarity with qRT-PCR systems, i.e. StepOne Plus, and QuantStudio
  • Experience ordering lab supplies
  • Ability to troubleshoot, solve difficult problems, and propose solutions relating to lab organization and management
  • Highly self-motivated with the desire to continuously learn, develop and accomplishes goals with minimal oversight
  • Ability to work in a high energy organization with evolving goals and deliverables
  • Professional, self-starter with the ability to handle stress, work with multiple priorities independently, and is not afraid to make decisions
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills with attention to detail to deliver high quality results
  • Good interpersonal skills, with excellent verbal and written communication with the ability to collaborate with all levels of lab staff and management
