Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products — Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti — and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer.  AbbVie is expanding its oncology early development pipeline.  More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these sites. They combine their expertise in small molecules, immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments.  

 

The Director, Patient and Investigator Engagement, Oncology Early Development (OED) is a key member of the Clinical Operations leadership team responsible for leading Patient and Investigator Engagement and is accountable for improved patient and investigator collaborations and accelerating clinical trial recruitment across the OED portfolio. The position leads development and implementation of a multi-year strategy to establish world class patient- and investigator centric strategies across OED. This person will drive continuous improvement in organizational performance related to patient and investigator engagement to achieve world class clinical execution across the OED portfolio in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders across AbbVie.            

Responsibilities:

•Creates and implements strategies to engage investigators for scientific and operational engagement to accelerate the site start-up, enrollment and delivery of data for programs in OED

•Champions the application of patient- and investigator-centric thinking within OED, ensuring that all programs are regularly seeking and incorporating insights from key external stakeholders in the clinical development and study planning process

•May manage team of 3-5 global site/investigator relations managers/liaisons

•Effectively creates and leads implementation of the cross functional implementation of strategies, process improvements, and tactics that result in industry-leading collaborations with clinical trial sites to ensure AbbVie is the “sponsor of choice” for investigators

•Represent OED on collaborations with appropriate external consortia and organizations to ensure that AbbVie is a recognized industry leader with regards to patient- and investigator-centricity in clinical development

•Effectively collaborates with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., Clinical Operations, Medical Directors/Scientists, Medical Affairs, CRO Partners) to establish enterprise solutions to enable effective and efficient patient and investigator engagement

•Ensures the implementation of OED patient and investigator relations is conducted in compliance with ICH GCP Guidelines, AbbVie Quality System and local and worldwide regulatory requirements; Keeps up to date on emerging and changing regulations

•Key contributor in establishing effective collaborations with patient advocacy organizations relevant to the current and future AbbVie OED clinical development portfolio.

•Represents AbbVie OED at external conferences with regards to patient and investigator engagement. Serves as a subject matter expert on industry best practices related to patient and investigator engagement

•Accountable for driving continuous improvement and business impact through benchmarking and managing key performance indicators related to patient and investigator engagement tactics

•Manages the development, maintenance, and effective training of the organization on recruitment and engagement related standard operating procedures and policies. Fosters a culture of continuous process improvement. Growth and development of direct reports and team. Ensures global compliance with corporate and divisional policies and procedures


Qualifications

 

List required and preferred qualifications (up to 10). Include education, skills and experience.

•Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field required, Advanced degree preferred

•Minimum of 10 years  of pharma-related/ clinical research experience (and/or applicable work experience)

•8 years + of oncology clinical research, project experience in a lead capacity (preferred), demonstrating technical and leadership competencies

•Proven leadership skills in a cross-functional global team environment with experience in managing virtual teams and an ability to influence and align stakeholders, and be a model and driver of AbbVie’s leadership attributes.

•Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to evaluate complex issues from multiple perspectives and drive smart decision making. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate persuasively and with clarity, flexibility and adaptability to changing requirements, resourcefulness and creativity.

•Expertise in drug development, operations and resource/budget planning across global geographies.

•Demonstration of successful execution of program in a fast‐paced environment managing multiple priorities.
