JOB SUMMARY 

Under supervision, the laboratory assistant will be responsible for assisting in executing laboratory experiments, projects and routine CLIA lab testing. The position will provide ongoing support to laboratory technicians and Clinical Laboratory Scientists with receiving, accessioning, aliquoting, processing and samples essential for completing the experiments and ancillary testing. In addition, the position will be expected to perform general lab duties such as ordering reagents and supplies, shipping and receiving, lab safety, maintaining files and inventories, as well as organizing and cleaning benches.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Sample Management:

  • Provide support with sample intake, accessioning and aliquoting samples and storage.
  • Receiving unpacks, and processes incoming clinical samples.
  • Enters and verifies data in the LIS database.
  • Resolves and documents incomplete or unacceptable specimens.
  • Creates folders, prints labels, labels folders, labels and scans requisitions.
  • Supports the administrative functions for the lab as required.
  • Assists in the creation and updating of processes, forms, logs and SOPs.
  • Checks, monitors and records temperature and investigate issues, implement solutions and initiate service when needed.
  • Coordinate waste pickup and handling special requests.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents for daily operations.
  • Perform shipping and receiving duties as needed.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

  • Graduation from high school or GED and 5 years of laboratory experience or one year of lab experience with college degree.
  • Clinical or R&D laboratory experience preferred.
  • Work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Be responsible, organized, and possess strong attention to detail.
  • Possess strong time management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding operational laboratory workflows and successfully balancing and prioritizing routine tasks and assignments.
  • Hands-on knowledge of LIS/LIMs.
  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, moving, carrying, bending, keeling, handling, pushing, pulling.
  • Ability to move and life boxes up to 50 lbs and carry short distances.
