Position Summary

The Director/Sr. Director of Preclinical Research leads a multidisciplinary team of scientists and bioengineers performing applied preclinical research and development of Pulse Biosciences’ NPS technology for future applications in a wide variety of surgical specialties including open, percutaneous, laparoscopic, endoscopic, and catheter-based procedures. This individual is responsible for providing leadership to the team and is also responsible for developing, planning and managing complex preclinical research programs.  This role requires a firm understanding of physiology, histology, and experience with a variety of surgical techniques.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide dynamic leadership to a group of highly advanced scientists, bioengineers and technicians performing applied research focused on future medical applications using Pulse Biosciences’ NPS technology.
  • Manage contracts, outside research laboratories, and services/deliverables.
  • Oversee and execute on all aspects of preclinical research and development activities including experimental design, protocol drafting, study execution, histology/sample processing, data analysis, writing reports and data presentations.
  • Drive preclinical program and studies to generate actionable, informative data.
  • Identify and implement workflow improvements to meet aggressive project deadlines.
  • Present key data at internal meetings and scientific conferences; prepare research manuscripts for internal review and submission to peer-reviewed journals. 
  • Explore opportunities to further NPS applications and support device iterations.
  • Collaborate and plan with other functions with interdepartmental projects, project planning, etc. On time-sensitive projects seamlessly.
  • Drive to meet deadlines and deliverables while working as an individual contributor and significant team member.
  • Oversee department budget and ensure preclinical projects are delivered on-time and on-budget.
  • Hire, develop and motivate a high performing team. Set team's annual deliverables/objectives, performance goals, and empower them to deliver on Pulse Biosciences’ strategic priorities and objectives.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience

  • Require MD, DVM or PhD with 10 years research experience.  BS with 15 years, or MS with 12 years also acceptable.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in medical device, biotech, biomedical, life sciences field; industry experience required.
  • Startup experience is a plus.
  • Experience with open surgical, laparoscopic, endoscopic, or percutaneous disposable/reusable medical devices.
  • Experience understanding, planning, coordinating, and conducting complex research studies.
  • Familiarity and experience with other energy-based ablation devices/modalities is a plus.

  • Exceptional managerial skills overseeing highly technical scientists and bioengineers.
  • Ability to design and plan complex research programs.
  • Must be comfortable with wearing multiple hats when needed.
  • Strong work ethics with a team-oriented mindset.
  • Excellent oral written communication skills and critical thinking skills.
  • Exceptional project management skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work conscientiously and with minimal direction, using good judgment, taking initiative to accomplish short and long-range projects, and recommend actions with minimal direction.
  • Ability to work as a team member, multi-task and be very flexible to adapt to the ever-changing work priorities and requirements of a dynamic, fast-growing company.
  • Proficient knowledge and skill in Microsoft Office Suite applications including MS Project. SmartSheet a plus.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.   Overnight and/or international travel may be required.
  • Ability to lift 10-15 pounds.
