The Director, Portfolio and Strategy, is responsible for successfully delivering scientific strategic planning capabilities for highly complex, cross-functional initiatives within and across the Immunology and Virology Discovery organizations. The individual combines knowledge of scientific and business processes to properly drive the execution of AbbVie’s research strategies. Responsibilities include interacting with key stakeholders, and leading strategic planning and process improvement efforts to help achieve research goals for productivity. 

Responsibilities:

  • Directly supports the Sr Director, Portfolio and Strategy, IMM and VIR / Chief of Staff with development, communication, and execution of strategic scientific programs to advance the Discovery portfolio.
  • Cultivates a strong working knowledge of scientific areas of focus, business operations, and strategic priorities to effectively communicate, interact and influence key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Facilitates and oversees the strategic planning and execution of the Immunology and Virology scientific operations including resource and capacity/resource planning, program strategy and timelines, scientific strategy formulation and alignment, as well as maintaining an enterprise-wide focus to set cross-area prioritization of workflows. Drives preparation and follow-up actions across functions.
  • Leads governance team meetings effectively; escalates and drives resolution of issues; demonstrates effective group facilitation skills and ability to drive consensus among team members regarding prioritization, resource allocation, and process changes.
  • Develops effective working relationships with project team members; prepares and delivers clear, relevant, presentations for a variety of audiences.
  • Acts as a supporting contact with all departments and sites under Immunology and Virology for the larger Discovery and R&D organizations 
  • Coordinates and drives deliverable preparation; develops and maintains process for portfolio advancement; manages and tracks productivity metrics. 
  • Develops Therapeutic Area and Functional Area identity to drive operational excellence and scientific focus.  Maintains and optimizes the area’s business strategy through strong collaboration with Finance, Business Management, and R&D leadership.

Qualifications
  • BS, MS, MBA, PhD or equivalent, managerial experience, and 10+ Years postdoc/industry experience.
  • The incumbent’s educational background and experience will have a significant impact on the Discovery portfolio and the success of various strategic initiatives with implications on the broader PPG mission. For this reason, broad education and experience are required.
  • The incumbent needs a broad business perspective, knowledge and understanding of drug discovery processes.
  • Strong organizational skills, scientific-breadth and portfolio management experience are essential.
  • Must independently resolve complex scientific, technical, analytical, and business issues across functional lines and divisions. Must be creative to resolve unique issues and balance quality, budgetary, technical, and timing objectives. Must be able to integrate knowledge and experience to make high impact decisions with limited data.
