MSC is seeking multiple Bioinformaticians / Informatics Specialists to join our NLM team; position level (Junior through Senior) is commensurate with experience. In this role, you will apply your informatics expertise to build and improve scientific tools for discovery.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide high level expertise in the application of technology to Medical Informatics, Public Health Informatics, statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, and/or other areas of interest to government health organizations.
  • Develop computational infrastructure to analyze and provide access to data from genome-wide
  • association studies, high-throughput sequencing, expression arrays and other sources.
  • Effectively work with a team in a production environment and communicate with NLM biologists and programmers, as well as scientists from the extramural community.
  • Support the coordination of data intake, data flow and data distribution for special projects
  • involving subject areas in genomics, genetics, clinical trial data, and chemical structure data.
  • Coordinate and contribute throughout the project lifecycle: requirements definition, design, development, problem diagnosis and resolution, development, and enhancement of system and application software as well as support for various scientific and programming services.
  • Formulate statistical and mathematical approaches to address scientific questions proposed by NIH biologists and researchers.
  • Support the intake and processing of data submissions for large scale studies in genomics and genotyping, including high-throughput sequence data.
  • Support the development of sequence analysis software, e.g., sequence alignment.
  • Apply IT expertise – including information retrieval technology, decision science, web technology, data mining, expert systems, and networking – to public health science and education.
  • Develop computational tools for effective and efficient analysis of large-scale genomic data, including sequence-based, structure-based, array-based, and proteomic data.
  • Support and/or enhance the usability and design of databases, search services, and other software features using document markup language (XML, HTML) and JATS format for scientific articles and information retrieval methodologies (e.g., machine learning and other AI and text).
  • Contribute to the design of systems to incorporate quality assurance workflows.
  • Write robust documentation in a timely fashion using plain language.
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Data Sciences, or a closely related field or equivalent experience
  • Professional experience in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or Data Sciences within an agile research and development environment
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python applied in Unix/Linux environments
  • Skilled in creating, modifying, and maintaining Unix scripts (shell/perl/python) to perform database management and analysis in parallel
  • Working knowledge of major public bioinformatics databases and tools and experience using bioinformatics software packages, such as MATLAB, STAR, BWA, DESEQ2, Bioconductor, GSEA, samtools, etc.
  • Ability to adapt in a dynamic work environment and work cooperatively with team members and clients from a broad range of disciplines and subject-level expertise
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, regarding both technical concepts and project management
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Clearance
  • Previous experience supporting the NIH is a plus.
