PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) Directorate is responsible for laboratory space, administrative space, infrastructure, campus landscape, planning, and design, and construction management at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Pipefitter is responsible for:

  • Installing, operating, maintaining and repairing piping, fittings, devices and related equipment that makeup steam distribution systems, potable water systems, chilled & condenser water systems, air/vacuum/gas systems, hot water heating systems, LN2 & CO2 cryogenic systems and waste systems
  • Operating special laboratory equipment using CO2, nitrogen, oxygen and other compressed gases
  • Measuring, cutting, assembling, and installing black, galvanized iron, stainless steel, pyrex, copper, and PVC piping systems
  • Assembling and installing pressure reducing stations and backflow prevention devices
  • Performing weekly, monthly, and annual preventive maintenance
  • Maintaining logs and records of equipment operations
  • This position is subject to 24-hour call in (rotating schedule) for emergency repairs
  • Contributing to the overall success of Operation and Maintenance Department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Assignments are reviewed for workmanship and adherence to standards

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of Maryland State Journeyman License or completion of four (4) year accredited apprentice program
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of craft-related experience including experience working with high-pressure steam
  • Knowledge of commercial/industrial plumbing and steam fitting principles
  • Ability to read and interpret, instructions, blueprints, and work orders
  • Must have and maintain a valid State Driver's License issued by the state in which the incumbent/candidate resides. Must have no more than 3 demerit points in the previous twelve (12) months or five (5) demerit points in the preceding thirty-six (36) months as determined by the Leidos Biomed Use of Government Owned or Leased Vehicles Policy
  • Ability to perform physical duties including lifting and carrying up to 50lbs
  • Duties include walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, working in confined areas, potential exposure to particulates, vapors or noisy environment
  • Experience with construction safety practices
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Experience with plumbing in laboratory and or health care related facilities
  • Experience with plumbing connecting from steam, water, chilled water, heating and/or waste systems to air handlers, reheat coils, emergency showers/eyewash, cage/rack washers and other site-specific equipment
  • Experience repairing and replacing piping, valves, traps and pressure regulators that makeup steam distribution systems
