In partnership with the Biology Leadership Team, this role will lead the implementation of a strategic vision that enables target identification, indication selection, early indication of biological activity and patient stratification/selection in disease areas of focus. Responsibilities include oversight of the Immunohistochemistry and Analytical Histology group as well as biomarker discovery/development to enable UNITY’s therapeutic programs. This position will afford the successful individual an exciting opportunity to work in an area of cutting-edge biology and will contribute at all stages of drug discovery/development, including target validation, establishing human disease-relevant rodent models and advancing promising therapeutic candidates to human trials.  The ideal candidate will have technical knowledge and practical experience around basic histology, various staining and histochemical approaches, fluorescence and multi-parameter imaging, quantitative analysis, and reporting. Prior management experience and a commitment to the mentorship and development of scientific staff is required. Experience/expertise in the ophthalmology or neurobiology research field is a plus.  


  • Oversight of Histology and Imaging group 
  • Accountability for helping to build capabilities in Translation Medicine, including leading program biomarker efforts, leveraging new technologies to further departmental objectives and building high quality human tissue collections 
  • Contribute to the company’s research strategy as a member of the Biology Leadership Team 
  • Assume accountability for delivering high quality data to support UNITY’s projects in ophthalmology, neurology and potentially other disease areas 
  • Identify gaps, efficiencies and new approaches to improve group work flows 
  • Management of budget and resources to conduct internal and CRO-based studies to drive projects forward 
  • Generate biomarker data to guide indication selection and the identification of targeted patient populations 
  • Ability to drive, manage, execute and deliver results for complex multi-functional projects 


  • Ph.D. with 5-8 years of scientific experience or Bachelor’s/Master’s degree with >10 years of post-graduate work (at least 3 years industry experience). Degree in a biological science, pharmacology or other relevant field 
  • Thorough understanding of all technical aspects of histology/pathology and how to apply data to advance scientific understanding of targeted pathways 
  • Prior experience in the discovery, validation and advancement of pharmacodynamic and disease biomarkers for clinical studies, including establishing robust assays for quantitative measurements 
  • Demonstrated experience in exploring and understanding complex biological pathways to enable new therapeutic approaches 
  • Proven communication, presentation and influencing skills 
  • Proficiency with histological image analysis and statistical analysis; experience with multiplexing technologies and image quantification tools such as Visiopharm 
  • Manage companywide project requests and provide cross-functional communication for histology-related projects 
  • Highly developed problem solving and risk management skills 
  • Familiarity with ISH (knowledge of the ACD platform is a plus) 
  • Track record of managing, developing, and mentoring junior scientists and research associates 
  • Creativity and the ability to lead and/or work within an interdisciplinary team in order to achieve technical and corporate milestones
