Purpose:

In support of the Business Services Group (BSG) creative team, the Design Production Director, produces and oversees digital and print solutions to ensure accuracy and consistency of design processes. May lead production assignments. Review and direct junior designers work to ensure accurate and consistent file set-up. Capture best practices and share design process improvements across the team. Partners with Creative Directors and works collaboratively with fellow Designers, and external vendor partners. Contributes to the development and clarification of project scope, timeline and budget, and shares accountability with Account Teams in delivering against project requirements and client expectations, proactively course-correcting when necessary.

Responsibilities:

Knowledge:

  • Understands and adheres to the Code of Business Conduct (CBC) and all other applicable AbbVie internal policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes creative functional knowledge to facilitate project development.
  • Maintains awareness of current design trends, new techniques, and technology, for print, photography, typography, illustration, animation/motion graphics and video.
  • Understands and interprets Brand Standards and Guidelines, including the AbbVie Corporate Brand, as well as individual product brands, as required.

Skills and Development:

  • Works with CD’s and the Project Manager Creative Workflow to efficiently prioritizes and enhance productivity, managing complex workloads to expedite timelines. Communicates priorities to all appropriate functional groups and individuals. Reprioritizes projects and tasks within a highly dynamic work environment.
  • Effectively reasons through problems and situations while thinking through decision implications.  Thoroughly investigates questions, issues and problems as they arise.  Considering alternative and creative ways of viewing situations and solving problems design-related or not.

Project Initiation and Discovery:

  • Assures that all projects adhere to department workflow standards while meeting client objectives.
  • Analyzes messages and determines how content should be best designed, including type, colors, grid, etc. in order to best achieve the overall goal.

Creative Execution and Implementation:

  • Executes project deliverables and tactics that support business and communication objectives. Executes design and production processes based on project specifications.
  • Implements appropriate internal and external approval processes.
  • Consistently communicates timely and accurate information as project progresses, meets deadlines and executes quality standards.
  • Proactively utilizes quality control processes, always leveraging best practices for greater efficiency. Provides innovative solutions that result in process improvement.
  • Works directly with, meeting and events team, account teams, project management, writers and creative directors to deliver against creative objectives/themes across a variety of presentations and deliverables.
  • Anticipates project needs and proactively provides expertise and innovative solutions to meet them.
  • Must track time on a daily basis and meet established utilization numbers for this function.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of regulations, standards and healthcare trends affecting pharmaceutical products and biotech.
  • Should have good working knowledge of brand identity, information graphics and data visualization, typography, illustration, digital and interactive design.
  • Must have design thinking skills as well as a good sense of appropriate design for audiences.
  • Must ensure that design enhances and helps clearly communicate messages.
  • Must have enough design expertise to expand upon creative concepts that strongly support communication objectives, tone and positioning.
  • Must possess sufficient creative talents, understanding and technical skills of presentation media, digital formats and creative design to determine the best method to portray the theme and content.
  • Must be able to develop designs that will break through the clutter and communicate the key message(s) aligned to the client objectives.
  • Must work well under pressure, exercising good judgment as well as good interpersonal skills.  Must be able to absorb and interpret urgent requests from senior executives and multiple stakeholders, as well as articulate ideas to colleagues in creative meetings and collaborative settings.
  • Must have a good grasp of project time requirements to be able to meet deadlines, client expectations and avoid over-commitment.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively within a team and seek clarity amid ambiguity.
  • Must be able to clearly communicate with others, including creative directors, fellow design staff, as well as external resources/vendors.
  • Requires transforming written work into visual communications, creating the greatest impact.

Accountability:

  • Must be able to recognize when a project is not proceeding to a positive and successful outcome.
  • Must be able to absorb and respond to constructive feedback in order to change direction when necessary to get a project back on track.
  • Must be able to work under the guidance of a creative director, as well as independently (with minimal supervision) and directly with Account Teams or clients/stakeholders and be responsible for scheduling one’s daily work schedule.

Minimum Education:  BA/BS required in graphic design and/or communications.

Minimum Experience:  5-8 years of graphic design experience within an advertising agency or in-house corporate graphics department and/or freelance business, with a focus on presentation/interactive design.
