The Amyris Fermentation team is seeking a Fermentation Manager to manage 8 Associate Scientists and oversee the planning, implementation and execution of Fermentation Laboratory Operations for new and/or existing projects and technologies in their fast-paced R&D environment. This role collaborates with programs, support groups and laboratory staff to ensure experiments are completed on time and in full. The individual best suited to this role seeks to make the highest and best use of company resources to deliver on promises made and fosters innovation within the team to identify, develop and implement operational improvements. The Fermentation Manager is highly engaged in the career development of the Fermentation team members, collaborates with other managers on group development, and develops and maintains productive relationships between Amyris departments.

Responsibilities:

    • Provides guidance and technical advice to direct reports and becomes actively involved as required.
    • Ability to train associate scientist on all lab processes
    • Lead infrastructure improvement project with dedicated project team
    • Accomplishes tasks through others using influence and effective communication.
    • Interacts with program teams to ensure research and development objectives are met.
    • Manages a team of Associate Scientists and supervisors to include career conversations, performance management and career development. 
    • Ensures staffing levels and skill sets are maintained using capacity model and training plan.
    • Executes experiments in the lab when needed Uses strong communication skills including presenting results and research, preparing technical reports and writing SOPs.

Qualifications:

    • 8+ years of directly related industry experience, including at least 2+ years with direct people management experience
    • B.S. degree in Fermentation Science, Life Sciences, Engineering, etc., or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Broad technical knowledge in fermentation and can provide technical instruction on new/improved processes to appropriate audiences.
    • Experience with automated and semi-automated bench scale fermentation equipment including troubleshooting and problem solving.
    • Ability to identify and drive opportunities for process & business optimization.
    • Ability to independently manage work, actions and expectations is essential.
    • Track record of pursuing objectives to completion correctly and on time
    • Team player and collaborator both within and across functional boundaries.
    • Strong organizational, collaborating and communication skills.
