Laboratory Animal Care Technician

 Responsibilities and Duties

• Use simple laboratory equipment/apparatus under supervision.
• Maintain written records in laboratory notebooks, laboratory forms, or logbook.
• Maintain laboratory animal colony.
• Clean and sanitize animal rooms, and support areas, caging, equipment, feeders, bottles and other accessories as dictated by current studies and pertinent SOPs.
• Dismantle, clean and assemble laboratory apparatus and equipment.
• Perform general preventive maintenance and janitorial services as assigned by Maintenance 
• May incinerate carcasses as needed following necropsies 
• Keep assigned areas clean, organized, and free of clutter
• Maintain an adequate supply of stock items in own work area.
• Act as messenger for supervisor, as directed.
• Perform functions as assigned by supervisor.
• Participate in in-house training programs for the technical staff
• Maintain confidential information
• Interact with the community and employees
• Support and participate in other company initiatives as directed by senior management
• Perform other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

Education and experience

• High School Diploma
• A suitable combination of education and experience.

Skills and Abilities

• Possess knowledge of animal physiology and morphology with the ability to use laboratory instrumentation.
• Good organizational skills.
• Ability to use a computer to compile data, maintain database/spreadsheet records and inventory utilizing the appropriate software.
• Ability to learn techniques used in the laboratory.
• Ability to handle laboratory instruments and tools, under supervision.
• Ability to handle animals and related equipment as required.
• Record data clearly and accurately.
• Exhibit a quality approach to work, possess an eye for detail, and demonstrate the ability to follow written instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
• Possess a knowledge and understanding of appropriate regulations and demonstrate the ability to apply these practices daily.
• Ability to read and interpret animal identifications, dose groups, and color codes.
• Adhere to all pertinent safety regulations and operating procedures.
• Possess a favorable attitude and disposition toward people and animals.
