We are currently searching for a Medical Technologist to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a full-time position with MSC, and it is on-site in Bethesda, MD.

 

 

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • 50%: Maintain the equipment, space, and test methods used in DLM in support of the Clinical Center’s Special Clinical Studies Unit (SCSU):
    • Perform laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses; report and maintain records of patient test results.
    • Monitor, troubleshoot, and initiate or take corrective action to maintain testing supplies, reagents, and equipment.
    • Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures when test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
    • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correct problem or notify staff; document all corrective actions taken.
    • Communicate and consult with pertinent medical personnel regarding collection procedures; troubleshoot any problems with the specimen or documentation.
    • Perform and document all quality control activities, instrument calibrations and maintenance preformed.
    • Perform proficiency testing in the same manner as patient specimens.
    • Maintain records of instrument failure, troubleshooting and QC.
    • Organize daily work based on priorities and needs of the laboratory and patients.
    • Perform inventory of reagents and supplies as required.
    • Collaborate with staff to evaluate new techniques; perform comparative studies with older technology; perform evaluations to determine new guidelines.
    • Comply with accrediting and inspections agency requirements participating in activities associated with the laboratory accreditation process.
  • 25%: Coordinate various student functions in DLM:
    • Collaborate with DLM and University of Maryland (UMD) staff to facilitate the annual medical technology student training program.
    • Collaborate with staff to develop a program in DLM which assists both DLM and non-DLM allied health professionals to prepare for and obtain their ASCP Specialist in Microbiology certification, SM(ASCP).
  • 25%: Coordinate speciality microbiology and DLM reference laboratory testing services:
    • Collaborate with staff to support procurement activities for the existing and any future microbiology and DLM specialty reference laboratory contracts. Note: this requirement does not apply to the main DLM reference laboratory contracts which are managed by a certified FAC-COR Level II federal employee.
    • Prepare and process microbiology and DLM specialty reference laboratory sample, paperwork and packaging according to the various needs of each reference laboratory.
    • Maintain the necessary hazardous packing and shipping training certifications, as needed.
    • Perform ordering and result uploading into the medical record, as needed, for non-interfaced microbiology and DLM reference laboratory test results.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a science related discipline.
  • Certification as MT(ASCP), M(ASCP), or SM(ASCP) preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in clinical Microbiology preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in BSL2+ or BSL3 laboratory procedures preferred.
  • Ability to lift 10 – 30 pounds.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
