About the role

Sana Biotechnology is growing, and we are hiring new team members who believe in the potential of cells and viruses as engineered medicines, who want to challenge status quo, and lead with the desire to work on novel ideas.  As a Viral Vector Research Intern, you will report to the Senior Scientist, Viral Vector Research to advance Sana’s Fusogen Technology for T cell programs. You will learn how to produce viral vectors (Fusogen Technology) to deliver therapeutic genes to target cell types, such as T cells for the treatment of various cancers. The internship is designed to be accessible to a new researcher and provide you with transferable skills for future research, education, and biotechnology endeavors.

We are seeking students who share in our passion that engineered cells as medicines have the potential to meaningfully change the outcome for patients across a broad swath of diseases AND that building an inclusive, diverse, and equitable work environment will improve our probability of success in achieving this vision.

What you’ll do

  • Cell culture: Work with adherent and suspension cell cultures, including primary T cells
  • Viral vector production: Routinely produce lentiviral vector, perform transduction experiments, and properly document results
  • Flow cytometry: Execute and analyze multi-color flow cytometry experiments
  • Experimental design: Design, plan, and execute experiments; perform data analysis, visualizations, and data interpretation.
  • Scientific skills: Lab bench skills, data integrity and quality, good lab and safety practices, comply with standard laboratory practices and company policies, including documentation of all experimental work in an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN)
  • Leadership and communication: Review and present data in a group lab meeting, and potentially at larger forums, such as cross-functional department meetings

What we’re looking for

  • Undergraduate coursework targeting a degree in a scientific discipline within Biochemistry and/or Engineering such as: Bioinformatics, Biological Sciences, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Biotech, Chemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology
  • Some introductory coursework in mathematics and physics preferred
  • GPA Requirement: 3.0

What will separate you from the crowd

  • Having some laboratory coursework and/or research experience is helpful, but regardless of past opportunities, we are seeking someone who has a demonstrated passion for science and medicine
  • Basic knowledge/ interest in gene therapy and cancer immunotherapy is helpful

What you should know

  • Working safely on a predictable and regular basis is an essential job function for this position and the Company requires that all individuals, subject to certain exceptions, be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • You must be 18 years of age prior to scheduled start date
  • You must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Available to work 40 hours a week
