Surrozen is a biotechnology company focused on discovering and developing novel regenerative medicines with a focus on unlocking the powerful self-renewal properties of the body through specific control of the Wnt signaling pathway.

Surrozen was founded by five leading-edge scientists: K. Christopher Garcia, Ph.D., Roel Nusse, Ph.D. and Calvin Kuo, M.D., Ph.D. from Stanford University; Claudia Janda, Ph.D. from the Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology; and Hans Clevers, M.D, Ph.D. from the Hubrecht Institute and Princess Maxima Center. Each has conducted extensive research on Wnt signaling, with findings that together shape Surrozen’s technology and approach to therapeutic development.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated automation engineer to join the Protein Sciences group. This position will enable transition of manual workflows and processes to semi-automated/fully automated robotics platforms as appropriate, along with ongoing support of these systems. The Automation Engineer will work in a highly collaborative environment, and interface with molecular biology, protein production, and assay development teams to lead the integration of automation technologies into day-to-day laboratory operations, and contribute to Surrozen’s therapeutic pipeline. Exact title will be commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups to develop, optimize and validate automated laboratory processes to improve quality, efficiency, throughput and cost
  • Transition manually intensive and error prone processes to more automated processes, for molecular biology, protein production, inventory management, antibody discovery, screening assays and other workflows that are only achievable with scale
  • Evaluate and qualify novel automation platforms, and if appropriate, validate and transition into routine lab processes
  • Maintain automation equipment, troubleshoot hardware and software related issues on liquid handler platforms, and manage related consumables
  • Define and carry out preventive procedures on automation equipment, validate functionality, and document results
  • Prepare technical reports and make clear and succinct scientific presentations that can be shared and transferred to and from cross-functional teams
  • Provide and/or coordinate training to new users of automation equipment
  • Maintain a detailed and well-organized record of experiments in an electronic notebook
  • Other duties as mutually agreed upon to make this position a career building experience

  • BS, MS or PhD in Engineering, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or related field with 3+ years of automation experience
  • Experience in streamlining workflows and developing robust and HTP laboratory processes using liquid handler and other automation instruments, from concept generation, to method development, validation and implementation, as well as user training and process monitoring
  • Solid knowledge and extensive hands-on experience with programming, method optimization, troubleshooting, operation, and maintenance of commonly used liquid handling robotic systems
  • Experiences with Molecular Biology, NGS, protein expression/purification or assay development workflows is a plus
  • Familiar with statistical data analysis
  • Experience with integrating laboratory equipment into laboratory information management system is a plus
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with a highly interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to interpret and effectively communicate complex processes and scientific findings in one-on-one discussions, and functional and project team meetings
  • Detail-oriented and a positive “can-do” attitude

  • We offer a dynamic start-up environment and a collaborative, passionate team
